Mulege Yellows!

chuckie - 2-25-2014 at 11:52 AM

Been hot !!! We got four this morning and headed back to the ramp at 9:55

Cliffy - 2-25-2014 at 11:55 AM

Who did you fish with? How can I find him when I get down there next month? :-) :-)

msteve1014 - 2-25-2014 at 12:06 PM

Nice. It's getting to be that time of the year, isn't it?

MitchMan - 2-25-2014 at 12:29 PM

Nice, very nice yellow. Don't for get to keep the collars (kama at sushi bars) for delicacy eating and the head and skeleton for soup broth.

BTW, how many feet long is that boat in the photo?

Also, I noticed that the water is absolutely calm...not even a ripple. Is it like that all the time? Jeesus, where exactly is that on the bay?

bajabuddha - 2-25-2014 at 12:29 PM

Attsa my boi, way to go Chuck!! Oh and Cliffy, most use a rod and reel, but i prefer C-4.... more bang for your buck!

Why Thank you Maam!

chuckie - 2-25-2014 at 04:34 PM

MM, Boat is 15'9"..Its a Triumph that started life as a "Flats" boat..I lowered the decks, added a center console , powered by a 45 Honda 4stroke...Fish most days on 4 gallons of fuel....Pic was taken at the North side launch ramp in Mulege.....

Cliffy - 2-25-2014 at 06:01 PM

I thought it looked like a Triumph I have a 17 ft double console Triumph with a 60 hp 4 stroke Mec Great Boat! I get 8 mpg, nobody on my home lake even comes close to that fuel mileage.

churro - 2-25-2014 at 08:41 PM

Nice Fish Chuckie!!! Those bad boys will wear you out quick!

MitchMan - 2-26-2014 at 08:12 AM

Chuckie, you are able to do your own gaffing...especially with a brut like the one in the photo? Pretty dam good. Would love to see you fish alone, pull one of those yellows to the boat, then see you gaff it and get it on board yourself. If I tried that, my back would blow out and vertebrae would be flying in every direction.

I have a fiber glass, self bailing 15' 3" Calibogie with a single center console powered by a 40 HP Tohatsu 2 stroke that gets about 6 miles per gallon on the water. Top speed about 33 MPH and can cruise all day long at 24 MPH. Problem is that I can't beach launch and beach retrieve that thing by myself unless the water is flat and glassy as shown in your photo. That's one of the reason's your photo caught my eye and why I asked where that spot was in Mulege. Even bought a 13 ft Gregor with a 10 HP four stroke Honda last year...still can't beach launch and retrieve that thing by myself in Bahia de los Muertos...giving up and getting ready to sell both boats and just pay a panguero.

I always gaff my own fish and usually prefer just to lift them by the gill plate which avoids putting lots of blood in the boat. Most people try to gaff the fish early for fear of losing them following a long fight with lots of adreneline running. One of the secrets is a 6 foot long gaff which means you are not bent over the boat with too short of a gaff.

If you just want to catch fish, a panguero may be the way to go, but for me 99% of the fun is figuring out where and what to do. The best of all possible worlds is to hire a local to go out with you, let him help you launch and clean, practice your spanish, and make a friend in the process.

MitchMan - 2-26-2014 at 10:54 AM

Many thanks, Pescador. That might be the greatest advice I have ever gotten.

chuckie - 2-26-2014 at 11:02 AM

What Pescador said! I use a GOOD gaff with a 6 foot handle and make sure the fish is ready to come in the boat. Catching fish is way more fun if you do it by yourself...If you just want fish a Safeway sale is lots cheaper. FYI: I have to be nice to Pescador, he owes me 2 Pacifico's..

Pescador - 2-27-2014 at 05:51 AM

Okay Chuckie, I am going for Pizza tonight, will bring the reels that Rigo finished and your beer is on me at the Pizza place.

chuckie - 2-27-2014 at 07:17 AM

Seeya for beers...I'll bring a couple more broko reels...

basautter - 2-28-2014 at 05:37 AM
