What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Ateo - 2-28-2014 at 09:05 AM

Rainy and windy here in Oceanside. Was thinking about heading down to Rosarito to buy some pottery today but I'm guessing the roadside vendors close when it's raining.

KaceyJ - 2-28-2014 at 09:11 AM

Torrential drizzle causing spinouts , pile-ups and other mayhem here on the Sandiego freeways.

Hilarious and true!!! Large waves forecasted mañana. Should be fun to watch but I'm a tad concerned about coastal flooding with that energy pushing ashore.

KaceyJ - 2-28-2014 at 09:26 AM

Looks like the first round should peak in about 48 hours,

May go down to ob to see what's happening Sun am

monoloco - 2-28-2014 at 09:43 AM

Foggy in the AM, sun breaking out now, 66º.

vgabndo - 2-28-2014 at 09:50 AM

Low clouds and GRAY. The Sierra Santa Clara are lighting up though. The Pacific is....well...pacific.

Ateo - 2-28-2014 at 09:53 AM

Nice photo vgabndo. Must be hard to be you.

Guessing you'll see an increase in waves mañana. Gonna be big up here.

woody with a view - 2-28-2014 at 10:24 AM

in yuma it's cloudy with a chance of meatballs! the drive home late this afternoon should be fairly epic! was thinking about going down to watch the mayhem at around 8:30am tomorrow as the tide peaks.

willardguy - 2-28-2014 at 10:40 AM

south of rosarito is windy,an oddly warm wind, not alot of rain last night and not a drop yesterday.

I guess it will have to do! I literally just looked out the window to see a whale blow and do a big fluke show as it passes between the point and the island. Pretty darn better than stuck in LA traffic!!! Huh?? Or Oceanside... This is what that looked like yesterday...

Osprey - 2-28-2014 at 11:11 AM

Sea water at East Cape now at 72 so if you like 70 days, 60 nights, a slight breeze, blue skies, you would be in heaven down here.

Bob53 - 2-28-2014 at 11:12 AM

Rainy and windy in Escondido right now.

"Neck of the woods"

durrelllrobert - 2-28-2014 at 11:12 AM

Ever wonder where that expression comes from?

www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-22668,00.h...

In Bill Bryson's "Made in America", the claim is made that the origin of "neck" is the Algonquian word "naiack" meaning "point, corner", Algonquian being the name for a North American native language (and indeed language group). This at least fits with other sources recording its first use as in the USA.

Matthew Carmody, London UK

According to word-detective.com: "Neck of the woods," meaning a certain region or neighborhood, is one of those phrases we hear so often that we never consider how fundamentally weird they are. In the case of "neck," we have one of a number of terms invented by the colonists in Early America to describe the geographical features of their new home. There was, apparently, a conscious attempt made to depart from the style of place names used in England for thousands of years in favor of new "American" names. So in place of "moor," "heath," "dell," "fen" and other such Old World terms, the colonists came up with "branch," "fork," "hollow," "gap," "flat" and other descriptive terms used both as simple nouns ("We're heading down to the hollow") and parts of proper place names ("Jones Hollow"). "Neck" had been used in English since around 1555 to describe a narrow strip of land, usually surrounded by water, based on its resemblance to the neck of an animal. But the Americans were the first to apply "neck" to a narrow stand of woods or, more importantly, to a settlement located in a particular part of the woods. In a country then largely covered by forests, your "neck of the woods" was your home, the first American neighborhood.

Cypress - 2-28-2014 at 11:28 AM

Sunny, 65 degrees, clear and calm. Barometric pressure at 30.11 and steady.:)

Bajajorge - 2-28-2014 at 11:32 AM

Snow in the Sierra, with more due later today and tomorrow. My trip to Baja is now on hold until next week. I was going to head south manana.

Kgryfon - 2-28-2014 at 11:38 AM

Rainy! Yes! This is good news for us!

David K - 2-28-2014 at 11:51 AM

Rain and wind in San Marcos (between Escondido and Oceanside), but not nearly the force the weather babes predicted last night. Even John Coleman said we should see over 2" of rain today... Maybe tomorrow? Although as I type this, the rain is hitting the side of my window here.

Always better for the weather babes to be wrong ...

Than for an Arab weather guy to always be right.

Right Now, There Are Heavy Winds from the Southwest (Approx. 25 MPH) No Rain, in Primo Tapia, Rosarito

Gypsy Jan - 2-28-2014 at 11:58 AM

There was some rain overnight, but when I ran the dogs outside to tinkle and get busy this morning, the pavement was wet, but there was no rain coming down then.

sancho - 2-28-2014 at 11:58 AM

Saw a piece on a Snow Survey done with in the last few
days in the Central Sierras, Ca., still around 25% of
normal, hope for more

DENNIS - 2-28-2014 at 12:28 PM

Gusting to 35....with horizontal rain, heavy at times, at this moment.

vandenberg - 2-28-2014 at 01:24 PM

Here in Loreto, clear blue skies, temp of around 83 with cool southerly breeze. Couldn't be more perfect!

bajadock - 2-28-2014 at 02:12 PM

View north to Ensenada. Cruise ship is barely visible center left. 30mph wind makes it difficult to keep camera steady. Or is that the delirium tremens?

View east to Maneadero. Next squall enters over Punta Banda hills to right.

Not much rain yet, but lots of wind up here with the cloud crowd. OK, rain just increased as I wrote that. Happy to still have electricity out here. 50/50 that we lose CFE connection sometime this weekend.

shari - 2-28-2014 at 02:34 PM

It's hot as hell today here in our neck of the Vizcaino Desert in Ojo de Liebre whale lagoon...gotta be 85, sunny with no wind at all...hmmm...wonder if that rain will get here?

Don't even talk like that, Doc. Think positive.

It's been gusting as high as 37 mph down here, Doc. You and the other Cloud People usually get it much harder than I do.
I'll keep an eye out for flying shingles from your casa in the cumuli .

bajadock - 2-28-2014 at 02:53 PM

Cadena Noticias

Nice picture, Bajadock. Now it' sunny here. We needed more rain...

Ateo - 2-28-2014 at 04:59 PM

Just got home from Rosarito. It was windy as hell and rainy. Back in Oceanside we just got hit by a gnarly pocket of intense rain and wind. Had to be blowin' 45 knots. Streets flooded.

Whale-ista - 2-28-2014 at 05:09 PM

Dark. Windy. Rain coming down HARD...yipes...this is a very powerful storm...

Aptos ca....south of santa cruz

captkw - 2-28-2014 at 05:41 PM

Its raining for the first in like forever !! and looking for a lot more !! CA runs on snow but around here with the Redwoods we depend on rain and lots of it !! I did not do my BAJA season this year as its been warm,,DRY and Dry !! my finned friends (salmon, stealhead, trout) need every single drop we can get !! its going to be a very ugly fire season In ca this year as there is NO water to access to drop on all the DRY fuel (wood/undergrowth) fires that are sure to come !! I have recently learned to pray !!! K&T:cool:

DavidE - 2-28-2014 at 05:55 PM

Vizcaino in the mid 80's and Eduardo and I found B.A. significantly cooler when we returned. A dark long sleeve shirt was not very comfortable inland. At 0800 we used the heater in the car on the way to Vizcaino. Turned it off after the el rebombeo. We encountered drizzle, one wiper swipe every three seconds on our way to Viz. Cleared up at 0900 near the bank.

I love folks from BC = when water unfreezes it's a heat wave.

DENNIS - 2-28-2014 at 06:33 PM

Jeeeezo...it never fails. Just got power back after a couple of hours loading the radios with batteries.
Not complaining though. I remember when it would have taken three days to fix the problem.

Thank you CFE.

desertcpl - 2-28-2014 at 06:45 PM

BornFisher - 2-28-2014 at 08:30 PM

Rain wise to this point, the storm was less than expected. But I just stepped outside and what a racket I heard!!! Must be thousands of frogs grateful for the rain and hoping for a chance to make polliwogs!!!!

chavycha - 2-28-2014 at 11:01 PM

Damn sun is blazing in the window this morning. 8 Am and 82 on the patio in sun and 75 in the house. We must endure.

BajaRat - 3-1-2014 at 08:23 AM

Nice Jefe, We finally started raining with hail and lightning last night. It's continued all night and into this morning. We had one of the wettest summers on record last year and this winter has been one of the driest, go figure :?: In the southwest we are hoping for late winter precipitation or this fire season is gonna be destructive.

P.S. Were still pouring Woody, has it stopped in Yuma yet ?

[Edited on 3-1-2014 by BajaRat]

woody with a view - 3-1-2014 at 08:29 AM

Thunder, lightning and hail at 6am this morning.

bajario - 3-1-2014 at 09:29 AM

That's like 10F in Lozenges or San Diego. Must be 67 in Las Peñas. Glad I left the comforters with the kids! Bet all three nietas are wrapped up in the big gold one! 67 with 90 percent humidity is freakin' cold!

Jesús told me beach water temp last week was 77. Wonder if it since chilled. Could mean bad fog.

chippy - 3-1-2014 at 02:11 PM

80° in 80° out Jalisco coast. Low of 73° outside.

BajaRat - 3-1-2014 at 02:16 PM

Rain changing to snow, hasn't stopped since round midnight

DavidE - 3-1-2014 at 04:58 PM

B.A. 1700 hours. Been drizzling all day. San Francisco Summer style heatwave. Comfort level has me wearing a Carhartt insulated vest.

I need to UV the casa tonight. Weather like this checks in the pesky pointy arachnids, the ones that glow under UV light. Especially check bathroom and kitchen.

So are you going to crawl around your house tonight with a UV light looking for bugs with 8 legs?

I'm sorry, it's a funny visual.

It is a beautiful day here, and the waves have arrived! The largest so far this year. The booming was intense last night, and woke the campers even over on the Aloha side!!

David K - 3-2-2014 at 12:09 PM

Been raining all morning up here in San Diego North County... coming down steady right now (11:10am Sunday).

absinvestor - 3-3-2014 at 07:41 AM

We've been in Huatabampito for a little over a week. Haven't seen a rain cloud. Highs in the low 80's and lows in the low 60's. Winds 8-12.
