Lots of new folks,one more time for a couple of laughs
This would be our third summer vacation at PaPa,s place,my family is really getting into this baja thing,all we talk about is when are we
going next and can,t we stay a little longer,the kids bedrooms walls are covered with baja pic,s,my garage is a mess,fishing poles,camping gear,and
finally a boat an motor,with our powerwagon and shell we are ready for anything.
PaPa,s place in those days was primitive at best,but we always had the cabana which I helped put the roof on three years earlyer and this year
a flusher,it does,nt get any better!!!
Baths were a bit of a problem,a wife and two little girls,well you understand,but we had a solution for that also,wait for everyone to go to
bed ,then go skinny dipping with your favorite bar of soap,worked well until that night.
It was a beautiful night a huge full moon as only a baja moon can be and bright as day,the wife an kids were finishing up and I was taking a
little swim maybe a bit to far for me but the water was warm and life was good.
I,ve never been a strong swimmer and had no business being out this far but I just felt great,the strokes were coming easy and fatigue never
entered my mind.
As I mentioned before the water was warm and O so clear I could see,O MY GOD directly below me was a huge shape,a large fish,a BIG
SHARK!!!!!
I coudn,t catch my breath,my heart pounded,vomit was only a moment away but now the adrenalin started to kick in,swim for your lifeand that I
did,really rolling now but I looked down and there he was only closer now,I started to yell to who I don,t know,everytime I looked down he was
closer,any minute now and I,ve had it.........WHAM he had my face.Ive always thought to be eaten by a large shark had to be the worst way you could
go...........But wait I,m still alive an all I have is sand in my eyes.
I beached myself swimming from my shadow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope when my time comes the old man will let me bring my rod and the water will be warm and clear.

I actually read your post on the other board. I see we have some old friends posting there occasionally.
Your story reminds me of the first (actually one and only) time I swam with a whale shark. Even though I knew they were harmless, they're still huge
in comparison to a human and when they come right up to you and you're in there element rather than your own it's intimidating.
But your own shadow is the clincher. More Porfavor!

I check out this site everyday and enjoy it alot,as long as it pertains to baja.

I'm just not into racing so much. Good folks in both places for sure though.

Non-divers seem to only be afraid of sharks and interested in shark stories. Sharks are not always killers as they do it only to eat and survive
with humans rarely being on the menu.
There are far more deadly things in the sea than sharks.

It reminds me of the time I was at Alfonsinas back in 1978 with a friend who owned a house there. His 21 Fishing boat was kept on a mooring buoy in
front of his house. Because of the tidal changes, one of us would swim out to the boat and bring it in for the rest to board. One a.m. it was my
turn to make the swim and as I got ready to start out, we saw a Whale Shark swimming around just off the mooring buoy. Although my friends were
laughing and encouraging me that the Shark was harmless and I should go out and take a ride like the Mexicans do, I was unconvinced that something
that big was to be messed with. After waiting a short while, the Whale Shark disappeared and I cautiously swam out. With relief, I hoised myself
onto the boat only to look over the far side to find Mr. Shark about five feet away seemingly looking at me through one eye. It probably would have
scared the crap out of me if it had come around the boat while I was still in the water.
On another occasion, same place, we were out in the bay diving for Scallops and as I swam around some rocks, looking down, I saw another shadow near
me. I looked upward to stare into a HUGE grouper about one foot in front of me. We both retreated hastily.

----always a great story, and brings back memories of scary things-----with me it was a humpback whale about 20 feet away while skin diving N. of BOLA
off little Alcatraz Island.
