MEXICALI. - Tired of being ignored by the federal authorities, a group of fishermen from San Felipe went ahead and blocked the federal highway to this
community to additionally complain of acts of corruption by inspectors from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.
The fishermen, in a group of approximately 50 persons, according to information from Federal Highway officials, urged the immediate intervention of
authorities to commence a dialogue and find a solution to the problems they face.
The protest started at approximately 10AM, when the demonstrators closed the two lanes of the federal highway from Mexicali to San Felipe, at
kilometer 180, to impede the entrance and exit of vehicle to the city.
The mobilization coincided with the presence of hundreds of Mexican and foreign tourists, who filled San Felipe for the Score San Felipe 250 off road
race and carnival.
At first, the fishermen did not permit any vehicles to pass, but at around 12PM, they became more flexible and let pass vehicles with foreign license
plates. However, in light of pressure from the people and as a result of a dialogue that Federal Highway police had with the leaders of the movement,
the closure became only intermittent and remains that way as of now.
The police officials, including municipal police, remained hopeful that some authority would show up to start a dialogue with the fishermen.
