Bringing a dog to Baja

Just heard that the Mexicans (!) are asking for dog papers + photos when crossing to go to Puerto Penasco. They keep a copy so you have to take an extra set. Anything like this happening at the Baja borders?

My brother-in-law was stopped and hassled about not having official papers from a vet w/ photo at Sonoyitos (?). He was eventually able to pass through. His friends were also hassled on a different day, same crossing, and they took a photo of their dog. They said when you get the "green light" to pass through the check point, if you have a dog, they will stop you anyway and ask for papers

It continues to amaze me, how inconsistent they can be when they really try.

Never has a problem crossing into Baja at Otay (southbound)

Never had a problem coming or going at San Ysidro, dogs and cat.:P

Sonora already has enough dogs.. and apparently Baja needs more. They even let this one end recently

How about Northbound trouble with US officials? Specifically with a cat. Never have had any problems before but it's been a few years. We usually cross at Tecate in the afternoon.

No problems going crossing Tecate. We take no dog food or treats to the US going back, but have been sent to secondary the past few years after being asked if we have a dog. A minor inconvenience. Paperwork and vaccinations are all in order. We have a collapsible crate set up in the back seat to secure our girl should that be an issue crossing into Baja. She loves it and it's her travelling hotel bed, too.

By "no problems" I mean has anyone ASKED for animal paperwork of any sort? We can get a local rabies vaccination here in Mulege if needed but we have never carried anything in the past. On the other hand, we've never been inspected either. Just asked the usual questions and sent on our way.

Also, the cat doesn't jump up and look out the windows either (grin).

I wonder if there is a vet in Tecate if we were to get sent back?

Just travel with the rabies proof. That's what I do with my dog, although I have never been asked

Felix came from an animal shelter. Was told that he had full shots but they didn't provide any paperwork.

Guess I'll just take a chance on having to talk my way through.

I've been through SY NB with several rescue cats. I keep my cat's vaccination records in the glove compartment in case I'm asked, but never have been. I also cross NB with a rescue dog, and she wasn't even noticed.

Yes, there are vets in Tecate, but I don't their names or where they're located there. Just wing it, and don't act nervous.

We cross northbound at Tecate regularly with 2 cats in carriers on the back seat and usually a dog or two, we have never been asked for paperwork even when sent to secondary. Interestingly enough, they have never asked about dog or cat food either. All you need crossing north is current (within 3 years) rabies vaccination records. Mexico only recognizes 1 year on rabies shots, driving across southbound we have never been asked for anything. When we have flown with the dog we are sometimes asked for a health certificate and sometimes not.

I suspect the U.S. border patrol has more interesting and rewarding interests than a pet cat. Felix sleeps on the seat behind me when in motion and, at the least indication that someone is entering through the side door, retreats to the bunk over the cab.
