Tourist Visa

BajaBoomerBabe - 3-4-2014 at 12:03 PM

I have a tourist visa for 180 days but want to stay a few weeks over my alloted time. Does anyone know what happens when one goes to the airport with an expired visa?

Is there a fine?

I will apply for my permanent residency next trip.

Thanks,

You may have a problem...not so much at the airport where you can buy out of most issues, but if it goes in your file that you let your visa lapse, it could come up again when applying for your permanent visa. Cuidado.

Okay thanks, that would be a problem. Best I leave when I am supposed to!

I believe that you can go to the immigration office and get an extension.

INM's online application form has a menu selection for extending your stay. The menu item appears to be separate from the menu item for the Temporary Resident application.

great, I might try that. Do you, by chance, have the website address?

Main website: http://www.inm.gob.mx

Online application: http://www.inm.gob.mx/index.php/page/Solicitud_de_Estancia

There definitely is a choice to extend your stay.
1. Extender su estancia
2. Ampliacion de tarjeta visitante

that's great, thanks a lot. I will check that out. It just might be the answer.

The weather is just too nice here to go home yet.

Pretty cool to be on vacation for half a year or more!!:bounce:

BajaUtah - 3-4-2014 at 01:05 PM

I'm assuming you are in Los Cabos.

An option, if the extension doesn't work out, is to go to the Immigration desk at the airport and claim you've lost your FMM. $30USD and you are on your way. Certainly not the most ideal solution but it worked for my wife and I last trip.

In the new terminal IMM is the far left corner of the 1st floor. Very nice guy manning the desk who spoke perfect english. (maybe just my lucky day)

BajaBoomerBabe - 3-4-2014 at 01:07 PM

Yes, but I don't call it a vacation anymore. I just retired so it is my life , just spending 1/2 my year in the sun! Yahoo!

BajaBoomerBabe - 3-4-2014 at 01:10 PM

So the $30 is basically a fine. That works for me too. And yes I am in San Jose del Cabo.

You may need to get the correct visa for part time resident, if you have property there you return to and live at... FM-3 ?

BajaBoomerBabe - 3-4-2014 at 01:12 PM

Yes I will be applying for permanent residency status when I return next fall.

The Paperworks in Cabo is doing our RT paperwork for us. You might want to give them a call about the FMM extension. I am working with Ruth in their office. If your Spanish is shakey like mine (sorry if thats an incorrect assumtion) she is good to talk to.

Be prepared for a lot of red tape.
Many of us here on the board have applied for the RP cards, and we have gone through the ringer for it.
You MUST start the process at the Mexican Consulate office in the US. Then have your passport photos with the Consulate application, as well as a valid US passport. While you are taking photos a studio, have them take an intermediate sized and an infantil, with right profile photos. Get about 8-10 photos of each type, "just in case", which will happen. Have your marriage certificate copy as well as several copies of your financial records.
When driving across the border, YOU MUST ASK THE INM FOR A CANJE FMM, instead of your regular FMM. It won't cost you anything.
I am not sure if a CANJE is obtainable at the airport INM agency.
Then be prepared for some long red tape as you fill out the forms at the local INM office. If you attempt to do it in La Paz, prepare to be horrified at the red tape.

Uh, she is from Canada. She may want to see the nearest Mexican Consulate to where she lives in Canada

LOL... not unless there's some turtle soup involved!
After reading what Udo went through, I am glad I will always be a 'tourist' in Mexico!
