Daylight Saving Time in Baja

Pappy Jon - 3-7-2014 at 07:17 PM

When do they change? A few years ago it was not the same as the US.

My favorite time of the year....................I get out of my depression caused by not being able to surf after work.

It varies by where you are. The border towns, including San Felipe, follow the US/Canada dates (this coming Sunday).

Further south, it's the same dates as Mexico (Apr 6 this year). And Sonora, like Arizona, has no daylight savings.

dasubergeek - 3-7-2014 at 09:42 PM

The rule is any municipio that comes within 20 km of the northern border follows the U.S. schedule. Because the very northern edge of the enormous Municipio de Ensenada barely grazes inside that 20 km mark, the entire state of Baja California follows California.

Sonora, like Arizona, does not observe the time change.

Ascención, Cd. Juárez, Coyame, Guadalupe, Janos, Manuel Benavides, Ojinaga and Práxedis Guerrero, Chih.; Cd. Acuña, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jiménez, Nava, Ocampo, Piedras Negras and Zaragoza, Coah.; Anáhuac and Los Aldamas, N.L.; Camargo, Cd. Mier, Cd. Miguel Alemán, Cd. Río Bravo, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Matamoros, Nueva Cd. Guerrero, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Valle Hermoso, Tamps, all observe the time change (from CST to CDT).

The rest of the Republic changes over on the OLD, pre-GWB system, so when I fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City on Monday, it'll be a 1-hour time change instead of 2, and the entire Baja peninsula will be on the same time until April 6, because B.C.S. changes with the rest of Mexico.

I still believe is very stupid, the whole thing.

I always wondered how cutting off the end of a candle and glueing it to the other end made it longer... i wish they would make it one way or the other, and keep it that way. Makes no sense to make the many bend for the benefit of the very few, and mess up a lot of minds in the process.

Pappy Jon - 3-8-2014 at 09:55 AM

Thanks. I was wondering if I was going to need to deal with MDT (NM), MST (AZ), PDT (CA), and then what ever it would be in Baja. At least I know Algodones will be the same as CA when I cross.

What about Baja Sur? Do they follow Sonora?

David K - 3-8-2014 at 10:00 AM

Jon, Baja Sur follows the mainland (not Sonora) in changing later... see dasubergeek's post, above.

Seriously, a Baja vacation means you don't care what the clock says... and a lot of that is true with the people who live there (ie. 'Mexican Time').

Pappy Jon - 3-8-2014 at 10:42 AM

I agree David. My concern was visiting the Immigration office in Algodones and not arriving too early.

David K - 3-8-2014 at 11:02 AM

If you do get there too early... get a breakfast burrito and start your vacation first!

DavidE - 3-8-2014 at 11:12 AM

Doan need no steenking clocks..............

Get up when the neighbor's car starts

Head for home just before I need headlights.

ABIERTO sign in Mexico does NOT MEAN WE'RE OPEN!

It means.......WE ARE NOT OUT OF BUSINESS!
