Has anybody been around East Cape road lately?
Haven't been in a couple of years. Anything changed?
BajaBlanca - 3-8-2014 at 08:08 PM
We have been here for a week and it is all great!
Justbozo - 3-8-2014 at 08:35 PM
OK! Thanks!
That's what I was looking for!

Depends on what you mean by East Cape. Many folks refer to Los Barriles and La Ribera as East Cape. But to me, those places are towns on the east side
of baja. Nice places too. But I see the East Cape as a region that starts east of Pueblo la Playita (AKA Puerto los Cabos) and extends NE up the dirt
coast road to Cabo Pulmo. There are small settlements and ranchos along the way, but no towns, hence the need for a name to call the area that is such
a nice destination. East Cape.
OK, got that off my chest. As to the road. From La Laguna and Buzzard's restaurant where the dirt road starts near San Jose del Cabo to the settlement
of Zacatitos the road is passable but slow. Hasn't been graded in several months. Lots of rocks etc. Then from Zacatitos to Shipwrecks it the worst
part. Crappy, bumpy, hasn't been graded for a year. Still passable in a passenger car, but slow going. After that the road has been graded within the
past three months, so much better all the way to Vinorama. Beyond there it is ok and gets better the closer you get to Cabo Pulmo. North of Cabo Pulmo
is dirt for a stretch and then well appreciated pavement the rest of the way to La Ribera.
Whether it needs it or not the road does get graded once a year just before
Easter week, Semana Santa. And throughout the year it seems the road is always in its best condition at the north end in the Cabo Pulmo area. For some
reason, terrain, traffic or political pull it doesn't deteriorate like it does closer to San Jose.

Now there is somebody that knows their turf!
Great first hand report, and yes to me East Cape spans the distance from Buzzards, with a pit stop at Zac's, to beyond Cabo Pulmo!
We've got a couple sandy spots to revisit.
Sounds like the road is still one big tope as I remember. Gotta' picture somewhere of a tope sign out here in the middle of nowhere on the rocky slow
road. Love it!
If you see someone screaming by your place doing 15 MPH in a white truck it may be me!
Thanks a bunch!

Traveled East cape Road, by what ever description, from the south, blacktop to blacktop and beyond. I found it to be as described and remembered.
I would like to talk about everything so nice out there, but I think I will say instead that the road is terrible and I saw two 4' rattlesnakes on the
road (live)!!! Maybe next time it won't be any better! Everyone stay away! TIC!
Thanks for the report, and letting me enjoy your corner of Baja.
BajaBlanca - 3-16-2014 at 10:30 AM
you saw 2 rattlers? wow...
we saw 2 deer and they really took us by surprise scampering across the road... Kodak moment but they were too fast for my to grab the camera.
El Jefe - 3-16-2014 at 11:47 AM
Yep, that would be Randy and Robbie the rattlers. We train 'em to scare away the faint at heart. The hardest part of their job is not getting run
over. But they are pretty good at looking badass. And they are fast when they need to be.
Glad you enjoyed the area. Pretty easy to get blissed out in these environs.

I really didn't want to let it out to the rest of the world, the stop at our "private" beach, the dolphins, mantas, the road runners you won't catch
on a snapshot digital camera, the 50 ton mammals standing vertical out of the ocean that could be viewed almost at will from the road and yes we saw 2
deer milling about down a side trail.
It is passenger car passable, but you should have good ground clearance for the rocks.
El Jefe
Thanks for having Robbie and Randy let us pass. I will return again some day fully expecting you and the Rattler brothers to keep an eye on things in
my absence.
Thank You
and
Thank You Baja!

I drove from Zacatitos to La Fortuna a couple days ago to surf a small South swell. The trucks had just dropped a dozen or so loads of dirt and the
graders were hard at work doing their pre-Semana Santa gloss-over. My car has low clearance and we still did fine by just driving slowly. Hope you
have a great trip.
Adios,
KevinD.
