What's up with the potholes?!

Doug/Vamonos - 3-10-2014 at 07:26 AM

Just returned from LA Bay. What I found was an increasing amount of potholes on highway one that I haven't seen in many years. Obviously, it's not nearly as bad as twenty years ago, but definitely more than the recent past. You think this is a change in priorities with the government? It seems like the past ten years brought new asphalt everywhere. Now it's deteriorating fast.

I heard from local fishermen on the Pacific side that there was a lot of rain this past summer in the area. A lot of areas had water in lagoons that I haven't seen since the early 90's.

Possible reason why the potholes were worse? I haven't noticed any substantial difference lately personally though.

Mextrans is S L O W L Y repaving the pot holed sections near Cataviņa, but I don't know what they are planning on doing with the second creek crossing south of there. They are so bad and deep now, that you have to crawl around them now. Just don't drive into the ones that you see the water standing in them...you may never get out!

After a section of road is paved, they forget about it.

There is no on-going maintenance program. The roads need to be chip sealed on a regular basis to extend the life of the pavement.

Chip sealing will fill in the cracks.....cracks collect water, the water undermines the pavement and potholes appear.

Especially when they freeze....

Bajaboy - 3-10-2014 at 06:31 PM

seems like they ignore areas they plan on repaving...

They can't fix them until they find the lost bus.

the area around perdregoso sucks.....

Doug - I had the very same thought last month. Just seemed worse than the last few years. Maybe the money's all being spent on the east side?

Lots of work going on this year from Mulege to several miles south of Constitution of all kinds.

Drove Mulege to La Paz today and it took an extra hour from what it was three weeks ago. Good detours, but a lot of them.

This included chip seal work in some areas.

Hey Santiago! On another note, I removed all that green shade cloth and rolled it up and placed it in my future bathroom/weight room if you want it. And if it's still there the next trip! The fabric is still in good shape, just dusty.

It has continued to amaze me that a newly paved stretch of this highway can get potholes in less than a year. I can only conclude that the construction contracts are victim to cronyism with bad contractors.

rts551 - 3-12-2014 at 06:00 PM

you think the potholes are bad in Baja, you aught to try them out in Arizona.

Doug/Vamonos - 3-13-2014 at 04:38 PM

I found it interesting that the majority of potholes were near the centerline of the roadway. The shoulders were pretty good. It does make the drive a little more of an adventure like the old days. Just glad I don't tow anymore.

My motorhome is going to take a beating on the way to BOLA in two weeks.

Just came through Tuesday and I can say I heard a few "oh crap on hold on" there is no safe way around all those pot holes when traveling at speed. Slow down or you might loose a tire or two.
