Rays restaurant in Mulege

Hello fellow Nomads. Is Ray's open down in Mulege? If so, is the food still good and will the restaurant still be open at the beginning of June (seasonal). I will be down in San Lucas Cove at the end of May and would love to eat there again.

Ray died under very mysterious circumstances.......If the restaurant is open it won't be by Ray.....

We had dinner there about 2 months ago

Food was fantastic and I think the daughter runs it now

Could be wife but a female relative for sure

Yes...the few rumours were dropped quicker than a deep-fried camarone wrapped in bacon.

The food at Ray's always got good reviews as did his hosting....

Some friends went recently and said that his ex-wife now runs it with the same chefs....all very delicious as usual.

Awesome... Thanks for the update. I just hope the restaurant will be open at the end of May when I get down to San Lucas.

We ate, and stayed, there last year and the food was pretty good. It was fairly expensive though.
We had a really nice night camping there and Ray was really nice. Sad to hear of his death

Damion,make sure to try the Bahia restaurant in San Lucas Cove, The seafood is fantastic and we play music there every Sunday afternoon beginning at 3.

We'll be there for sure. Sunday, the 25th of May, will be our first fishing day; we'll stop by for some beer and seafood that afternoon. I just hope the dorado come in a little early this year, and the yellows are still biting.

Licho Ortega and Pulpo appear there, I believe.

They play very tasteful Mexican classic ballads, acoustic guitar and percussion, very lightly amplified for great background dinner music.

?Is Ray's still open Thursday-Saturday nights only?..

Rays is open, his wife runs it. The food is the same as always, delicious. I believe it is open thursday- Sunday and I believe they are even trying to serve lunch, better call ahead on that. It's business as usual minus Ray's smiling face, He was always overly nice to us.

Be sure and order the Oysters Rockefeller, simply AWESOME...

Yes... the oysters rockefeller... that's why I wanna go back. Don't get me wrong, the other food was great too, but the oysters rock is awesome.

Good luck to you,Faby, you have a very successful café...and for good reason. Good to see you are holding up the fine dining tradition at Ray's, as always.

Speaking of Ray, I will, like all of you, miss Ray's charming smile and gracious personality. He was the perfect host and was best at making you feel very welcome in his café.





The creative menu is outstandingly delicious...I tried everything on it and relished each. The Shrimp Papagayos are excellent as is the popular Oyster Rockerfeller. And who could go wrong by ordering Squid Steak or Lobster with some rich flan for dessert?

Even when he & Faby had the original Ray's Café at Santispac, it soon became a superb place for dinner....and FUN to boot. Those were excellent times for all bay dwellers. (a easier run to Ray's!) Many times we'd bring our catch-of-the-day to Ray and he'd prepare it for dinner that night. Here's a collage of photos from Ray's at Santispac...from many years ago.




Ray was more than a good host who served delicious dinners...
He was always helpful and accommodating when dealing with our sometimes wild suggestions. With Ray's help we created the first Pinto Derby and Fish Fry at his Santispac café. (A fishing pal & I were sitting at the bar one day complaining about our latest fishing fiasco with large yellowtail...and said to the world at large, "Hey, why not have a pinto derby? Everybody and anybody can catch one of those!" And so it began....gracias, Ray.

We always tried to stop at the original.
Then we camped at the current location and ate there two nights.
OMG great food and it was so quiet at night, it was deafening.
Is it still that quiet out that way?

Yes, it's still quiet out there.

Later on in the season when evenings are staying a bit hot, I enjoy going out for rocky oysters and a glass of white wine or sparking water, watch the sun go down through the open windows.

The sun still sets in the west silhouetting those beautiful old peninsula mountains and casts a glow over the surrounding alfalfa fields and green grassy area of the campground. The birds are settling in for the nightfall.

Life can be very, very nice.

Old icehouse road out of Mulege. You will see signs after you find the road.

There is a campground and, if I remember correctly, a few cabins for rent.
It is a beautiful place.

Sign on the highway has a closed sign across it... Have not heard anything about if they will open or not...

Ray's late wife Faby, opened it for a little while but then went to Canada. At this point, there is no concrete plan to re-open the restaurant unless someone new steps in to make that happen. It is a really tough business in Mulege. I like most of the restaurants there but they all seem to be struggling this year.
