San Felipe hotels

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 01:05 PM

Hey guys, were planning to go to San Felipe on semana santa. Any cheap hotel you recommend?? Were only planning to sleep one night there, and then off to highway 1 thru Gonzaga bay. Thanx in advance.

This has been asked a few times, I don't think you get
much for the $ in SF, there are 6-8 in the downtown
area, if I were staying 1 nite I would look at El Capitain,
2 blks so. of the Malecon

Bob53 - 3-11-2014 at 03:29 PM

I would also suggest El Capitan.

The Wonderer - 3-11-2014 at 04:01 PM

San Felipe during Semana Santa is a zoo. If you do happen to get a place at El Capitain for one night, don't plan on getting much sleep. Fireworks go off most of the night. No thanks, I've been there, done that.

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 04:17 PM

really?? i thought that only applied on the 4 of july!!! im losing the excitment over your statement. lol

StuckSucks - 3-11-2014 at 04:50 PM

We've stayed a bunch of times at the Langosta Roja - a decent hotel with friendly people only 1.5 blocks from the Malecon, but it's LOUD overnight. All night partying bar-goers in the neighborhood, loud musica, sirens from police cars, downtown noise, etc.

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 04:56 PM

sirens from police cars??? uh oh!!! im starting to think ditching the night in San Felipe!! lol

We stayed at Hacienda Don Jesus last week, very nice. 686-577-0080(mx#) Also looked at the rooms at Kikies camp they looked very nice. Cliffh

Bajahowodd - 3-11-2014 at 04:59 PM

San Felipe is a place that actually gives Baja a bad name.

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 05:13 PM

thats bad to hear. I was there last year, and we stayed in a hotel called Georges. It was a nice experience and we didnt had any problems. But we didnt went in semana santa, we went on memorial day. Maybe memorial day its quieter than semana santa.

David K - 3-11-2014 at 05:26 PM

Tijuana and Rosarito are the places that give Baja a bad name up here... I have never heard of too many be-headings and narco gang wars happening in San Felipe. The worst thing there in recent memory was the kidnapping of motoged's motorcycle.

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 05:55 PM

David...im offended!! i live in Tijuana, and i havent been be-headed!!! lol

liknbaja127 - 3-11-2014 at 07:48 PM

Stuck sucks is right on with Langosta Roja,It is a nice place with security. Good prices, A little loud on sat. nights and race weekend! S.F. is a great place! have a great trip:bounce:

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 07:58 PM

oh ok. thanx for the advice liknbaja127 and all of you fellow nomads.

freediverbrian - 3-11-2014 at 09:26 PM

SF has many hotels, some cheap, some good, good and cheap?? NO! , Don't expect much and you will not be disapointed

villafontana - 3-11-2014 at 10:24 PM

Hahaha..ok...thanx for the advice, freediverbrian!! Lol

meme - 3-12-2014 at 07:57 AM

Why not choose a motel north of town? There are at least 3-4 on HWY5 as you head into town. Not expensive & much quieter for a good nights sleep.

villafontana - 3-12-2014 at 08:45 AM

Hey not a bad idea meme. Now i remember several of them, before entering SF. Thank u.

David K - 3-12-2014 at 08:52 AM

Search for post by Ken Cooke on the motel north of town he uses... and he has two small dogs too. Ken posted photos of it.

edit: It is the Diamante, west side of highway.

No no no !

San Felipe is an excellent destination......whoever said that this town gives The Baja a bad name should be put on the ol' plank and off to shark'ies :-)

It's a great town that is absent of the drug cartel issues. The downtown area is a little nuts during the Spring breaks....but really at night time. Would I rent a room near the malicon or downtown during the Spring break....the answer is no.

North of town (6 miles) there are four or five motels. Once you pass the El Dorado....start looking...... the first settlement you'll see on the right (Edido) has three nice motels. Reservation is recommended.

villafontana - 3-12-2014 at 09:57 AM

Thabk u mcfez, i will probably stay in those motels outside of SF. I like to sleep well at night, and in downtown SF i probably wont. Thank u all for your advices.

With you on that, a little dusty, a few too many plastic
bags blowing in the wind, yes. Certain weekends too
crowded with Gringos/ Mex Nationals from Mexicali, yes.
Beautiful beaches like the Cape, no. Giving Baja a bad
name, heck NO

gallesram - 3-12-2014 at 02:19 PM

Unless you absolutely have to go during Semana Santa, I would definitely avoid San Felipe; it is an absolute zoo. Thousands of people crammed on the Malecon, police everywhere, dust, dust and more dust, traffic, etc. etc. We went one time many years ago and vowed to NEVER go back during that time. If you have kids in school and/or you have the week off from work then you don't have a lot of choice, but if you can avoid it definitely do so. Memorial Day is a much better option; will be busy but nothing like Semana Santa.

villafontana - 3-12-2014 at 03:45 PM

really gallesram?? if its that bad, id rather go south thru Ensenada, than Gonzaga Bay. i love going to SF, but not when is that crowded!!

Bajahowodd - 3-12-2014 at 04:49 PM

All I know is that it is a very dusty and noisy place that is designed to attract dirt bikers and three wheelers who drive all over the place kicking up dust and making tons of noise.

If that is your cup of tea, by all means, go to San Felipe.

Having traveled down and up the peninsula, many times to Cabo and back, I just feel that there are so many other preferable places to visit than San Felipe. But, that's just my opinion.

David K - 3-12-2014 at 05:14 PM

San Felipe is a far smaller town than Ensenada, and will be easier to drive through if Gonzaga Bay is your destination... plus, there isn't a dozen other towns like there is on Hwy. 1 to pass through.

Bob53 - 3-12-2014 at 05:38 PM

I haven't been there in many years but I used to stay at a hotel a ways south of town that was always nice and quiet and away from the crazy tourists. I don't remember the name but it was painted yellowish orange and the walls facing the beach were built at angles towards the water if that makes any sense. Sorry, had a few beers.

mcfez - 3-12-2014 at 07:52 PM

So true David.

Cabo Del Sol is down there somewhere....among the overcrowded beaches....golf courses and the smog from all those cars. I wouldn't heed to advice from someone that lives in an gated community 900 miles away.

San Felipe is not dusty nor a RV off road hell. We just love our little town that is full of non criticizing folks.

Skip Georges...Tried to check in they were empty, Quoted me a rate and a 10/1 exchance, I had pesos...Being tired I said Bleep it and OK...Then after they took my money, That room wasnt available and they wanted 400 more pesos for an upgrade..grabbed my money off the counter and left...more later....

basautter - 3-13-2014 at 05:40 AM

I like the El Cortez. They have a wall around the property with a gate guard (still gaps, but better than most). They also have a great restaurant, and they take credit cards. I think rooms start at around $60.00 per night,

chuckie - 3-13-2014 at 06:20 AM

I ended up last nite at the Villa Los Arcos, north of town..squeaky clean, secure and quiet. No restaurant close and I was tired. The managers wife brought me cheesy chicken and tortillas from THEIR meal..I LOVE MEXICANS!!! Very fast internet..No cable or Sat TV (thank God).....50 bucks

David K - 3-13-2014 at 08:28 AM

Nice, !!!

Then, the last time I was down there, I must have been dreaming. There were three and four wheelers driving all over the place making noise and raising dust. Now, I can wake up.

rts551 - 3-13-2014 at 05:08 PM

You were not dreamin!

freediverbrian - 3-13-2014 at 09:50 PM

SF is what you want it to be , go on a big weekend with warm weather and yes it is crouded and with lots of off roaders.and it should be the town needs the money coming in. Go mid week or off season the town is peaceful and quiet.

villafontana - 3-14-2014 at 10:38 AM

I love going to San Felipe. Specially from the Ensenada highway. The scenery from that road is incredible. But im not a big crowds kind of guy. The times ive been there have been in low tourism time i guess. Last year we went on memorial day, wasnt that crowded. Or maybe i didnt notice it. We were only a few minutes in the malecon area in the morning, and then we were off all the way down to Bahia Gonzaga. The newly built highway is awesome and the scenery on that road is breathtaking.

mcfez - 3-14-2014 at 11:09 AM

Mid way driving on 3 to SF from Ensenada...on your left...you will see a little stand that has baskets for sale. The old guy there actually makes them on the the spot. Very cool to watch his artwork in progress. We always take a LONG day to drive through each town on the route...so much to see and there's not a single McDonalds, closed in communities or noisy gofers like in Cabo Del So .....on this route to dust free San Felipe :-)

Hey mcfz thanx for the info. Ill keep an eye for the basket guy. Sometimes i get so concentraded in the natural scenery that we dont see people or the artwork. Maybe we take them for granted, instead of watching them master their art.

mcfez - 3-14-2014 at 02:46 PM

Colonia Lázaro Cárdenas, This where you'll want to spend a good deal of time. Fuel and lots of great eateries. Farmland and friendly folks. Google this town on Google Images. Have a great trip
