Suggestions for road trip South for Semana Santa

SlyOnce - 3-18-2014 at 10:30 AM

Hi, I live in Playas de TJ. As much as I love it here, I'd like to explore options for retirement further south. My MX novia and I plan to drive to Guerreo Negro followed by Mulege, Loreto, Nopolo and Puerto Escondido for Semana Santa 2014.

We will be leaving Playas on Saturday 4/12 and returning 4/19 or so.

We plan to do some limited car/tent camping and some hotels too, around the $MX 300p price range. We will be driving my Ford Explorer 2 wheel drive.

I'm a sailor and I like to fish, explore beaches, look at museums and historical sites. My novia is an avid explorer. One of my prime requirements for a retirement area is a place to keep the boat, prefer docked but a mooring would be OK.

Suggestions sought for places to stay, camp, hotel, eat, etc. Must see places too.

get ready for a barrage of "oh god no! its semana santa!"

Honestly I would not do it!! Hotels will be jammed and there will not be an open spot for your tent on any beach. Go the week after Santa Semana and you'll find plenty of fun etc.

retirement options on the pacific side where the weather is comfortable year round?

if semana santa is your novias week off from work, the naysayers would have you hole up at home and do nothing! that's crazy!

dont let the naysayers scare you off. just plan ahead. lots of travelers that week, so make reservations. a lot of people on the road. dont worry, be happy, plan ahead by making reservations

yup!

Pick a beach, head straight there, make your camp and have fun.

My novia works at a MX prepatoria (high school). This is her week off. She don't want to sit at home that week.

I don't know but it seems like southern Baja is a big place. Certainly there has to be room?

Yes, I would also be interested in the Pacific side (cooler summers I'm sure).

Kind of hard to beat Playas climate but I need a final adventure.

Maybe the Pacific side for Semana Santa. Not much going on in Lopez Mateos that time of year.

And good luck finding a boat mooring place other than La Paz and Cabo and maybe a few other expensive places. Trailer or beach is what we have.

Please give us an update when your back. I hope I'm wrong but having personally gone thru it I'm not optimistic. I will say that I don't have much experience on the Pacific side for Santa Semana. We did live on the beach near Ensenada but we spent Easter in the States. The Easter we spent in Baja was near Mulege and the beaches were so crammed that strangers were sharing tent stakes since there wasn't even room for two stakes between tents!! In April the weather is much better on the Sea of Cortez side.

if you are OK with the Pacific side then head to BAHIA ASUNCION. It should not be crowded, it is beautiful, they are well set up for camping - you will love it!

really, bahia concepcion (between Mulege and Loreto) is the most gorgeous beach around but it gets really really REALLY crowded. Somewhere, way back when, Pompano posted some incredible shots of the crowds ..... and it gets crowded precisely because the weather is warm and the water is welcoming. You can kayak, SUP, fish, swim or snorkel. The Pacific is far colder but all that can be done too.

Have fun and I second absinvestor -please post a report after you return.

Any trip report?

My novia's BCC (Border Crossing Card) and I-94 Permit (US Tourist Visa) arrived so there was very strong desire on her part to head North. We passed almost 2 weeks touring San Diego - Balboa Park, Old Town, Cabrillo National Monument, La Jolla, Ocean Beach and sailing in San Diego Bay. We also went to Los Angeles.
