Day trip to Anza Borrego

wilderone - 3-23-2014 at 09:44 AM

Went to Anza Borrego desert to see this year’s wildflowers. There weren’t any. But lots of birds and spied a few nests. The Ricardo Breceda metal sculptures are fantastic. There are local oranges, grapefruit and dates for sale in Borrego Springs as well – fresh and juicy. Nice day.

Great photos. Are the sculptures clay or metal?

wilderone - 3-23-2014 at 10:34 AM

The scultures are metal - 129 of them I believe.

love Borrego Springs. Hiking in the slot canyons are always one of my favorite day trips. Casa Del Zorro (spacing on the new name) has just re opened and they have amazing rooms if one wants to spurge, I forgot what the new name is but they are back up to the old standards

Love the photos. AB is California's largest State Park, I believe. Great place to explore.

No desert bloom due to lack of rain, or it's just too early to see them?

Barry A. - 3-23-2014 at 05:13 PM

--------both lack of rain, and rain not at the right times. This year is not looking good for ABDSP wildflowers, so far. The next 2 weeks or so is critical, and it is almost too late now.

For the first time in 14 years we don't plan on our normal stay down there------kinda sad..

Get out there the first Sat of April (the 5th) for the liar`s contest!!!
Some great stories and lies!! The most outrageous I ever heard was some guy who got up there and said "I once met a fisherman who told the truth" and then sat down. It was the biggest lie the judges had ever heard in the history of the contest!! No one has ever topped it, some spending 10 minutes to spin a bigger yarn!!

April 5 & 6 is the annual archaeology weekend. Events at Borrego Springs include tours of the archaeology lab, native american basket and pottery display, pottery making demonstration, pictograph stories, a couple field trips to see petroglyphs and pictographs at Piedras Grandes and Clark Lake (Sunday - pre-register - $5), demonstration of native plants for food, medicine; ice cream social at 4:30 on Saturday at Begole Archaeological research center. + more.

Well, at least the Palo Verdes are blooming this year---they got a nice soaking in the August/September thunderstorms----in fact hundreds of seedlings have sprouted up in the area around my property out there. Guess Borrego didn't get much rain from "Titan" after all.
