Don't you just love it when on hywy 1 you look in your side mirror and a semi is going to pass you? Holy crap is there anything more scarrier when you are pulling a wide camping trailer which is wider than your truck, you're holding the lines, then a semi decides to pass ? Ahhhhh, I am still alive, gotta say those mexicans truck drivers have a lot of skill. Except when I see all those roadside grave memorials, I have to wonder.

I rate those moments on what i call the "Sphincter Factor". It's a 1 to 5 scale, like river running; and which a '6' is Niagara Falls. Ain't it nice now you have another 12" of lane, and a smidgen of shoulder to cope with (most of the way)?

However, hats off to the Mexicano Camioneros... they are 99% the most curteous drivers on the TP1.

Does anyone know the details of Hector's demise? I've admired his memorial, wondered about the circumstances.

Agree the truckers are generally professional/courteous. Their livelihoods as well as lives are on the line.

It's more often the private cars that are in a hurry and ride my bumper that concern me.

Back in the day, I used to take the Bus TJ/La Paz
straight thru. These bus drivers knew 1 very well,
but one time, while sitting in the first seat near the
front door, I heard one of the drivers pointing out the sights
to this young newbie driver, it was obviously
this guy's first
time down. While going what I imagined was 80 mph,
around midnite
thru the wash's by Catavina, thoughts of cows coming
thru the windshield had me planning to get out, anywhere,
just pull over, just then this young Mexican woman came
up and was flirting with the driver, he immediately slowed
down and was I relieved

Yes. Looking in your mirror and seeing a semi about to pass. And then looking out your windshield and seeing a bicyclist in your lane in front of you.

I call BS. If the truck has enough sight distance to feel it safe to pass then there has to be enough sight distance for the overtaken vehicle to see a bicycle in the distance. The truck should need a thousand feet or so to pass, and the overtaken vehicle had better be able to stop in a third of that at any time on the Baja highway.

Personally, when driving my 8' wide outfit, when I see that a truck is going to overtake, (and I agree that it is safe to do so) I get my left signal on to let him know that I know he is there, and then I slow way the hell down, so the time we are beside each other is minimized. Then, in that million to one chance that the bicycle is suddenly there, it is even easier for me to slow (to a stop if necessary) to eliminate the need for the road to allow 3 vehicles to pass. This STILL isn't about bicycles. It is still about sharing the road. IMJ. For new drivers on this highway, I'd also suggest a real resistance to the inclination to try to speed-up and stay ahead of the truck. Being overtaken only requires a few seconds, racing a truck lasts for hair raising miles, isn't much fun, and I've done it and don't recommend it.

Something tells me that Hector wasn't passing anyone when he met his end! Those trailero memorials are rarely built along straight sections of the road! :coolup:
