Simple is fine, no hookups needed. Looking for safe place, pet friendly, with hot showers.
If on water, are mosquitoes a problem?

We have camped at Don chong's which has no services...and there are lots of mosquitoes around the presa. Also make sure you have ear plugs because the
bull frogs make a huge racket all night long if you are camped anywhere along the river. Sure is nice to take a dip when it's hot though!RnR - 3-23-2014 at 08:17 PM
We have stayed at three different places for a total of 6 times.
Our experience:
Rice and Beans - (3 times) Concrete parking lot, highway noise, restaurant on site, showers are non-functional. Talked them into letting me use a
shower in an unoccupied room, but you could tell, they weren't happy about it.
El Padrino - (2 times) Elec sites up front or dry camping in the palm grove, quiet, walking distance to restaurants in town, a few mosquitoes, showers
are a bit funky but are good after a day on the road. You have to ask them to light the hot water heater and then wait about twenty minutes. Pets -
not an issue.
The one on the downstream river bank immediately after crossing the dam. No services, no showers, you may need a blood transfusion after walking your

I second the comments from RnR with the exception of the blood transfusion. No problem when we were camping right next to the lagoon. very pretty spot

The mosquito issue may be seasonal.
We are always passing southbound in mid-October. Right around the end of the rainy season. There tends to be mosquitoes most everywhere we stop and
where there is any kind of green vegetation around. Northbound six months later, have never seen a mosquito.
I can't remember if the lagoon camping spot was in October or April????? 50-50 chance that it was in October.....

In my opinion, El Padrino is just about the best you will find in the area.
And it is virtually just across the street from the Desert Inn, or whatever it is called today. They have a bar and a decent restaurant.
Only mention it because, if you are tired of driving and don't want get back in your car or truck to go get a drink or a meal.Whale-ista - 3-24-2014 at 05:38 PM

Personally I would camp in the first campground you drive by on the main road. It is a gorgeous spot next to the lagoon.
But as Shari says...the bullfrogs will either lull you to sleep, or keep you from sleeping.
Kind of like the people who b-tch at the crowing roosters at 4 a.m.
I think they are part of Mexico folklore and part of life, while others curse them to death.
I love the frogs and the roosters!!!
