LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Twenty of the toughest competitors in desert racing survived the 37th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, Nov. 18-20, to earn 2004 SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards. In addition, three of those racers will split this year?s $12,000 SCORE Toyota True Grit Award.

As it has for 19 years, Toyota is presenting the prestigious awards to the desert racers who finish every mile of every race in the five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Racing Series, the World?s Foremost Desert Racing Series. The awards will be presented during the annual SCORE Awards Night to be held Saturday in the Conference Center at Primm Valley Resort in Primm, Nev. The SCORE Awards Night will also honor the five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Series point champions along with the 2004 SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year award winners.

After five races and 2,092.61 miles of rugged desert terrain in the U.S. and Mexico, 20 racers in 9 classes earned the 2004 SCORE Toyota Milestone awards.

?Toyota is proud to honor the world?s best desert racing drivers,? said Les Unger, national motorsports manager at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. ?For 19 years, we have had the privilege of presenting the SCORE Toyota True Grit and Milestone Awards to the toughest racers on the planet.?

Among the survivors of SCORE races in 2004, the three point champions in the non-factory-backed Classes 1-2/1600, 10 and SCORE Lite will split the $12,000 SCORE Toyota True Grit Award, divided equally among the class point champion(s) in these three classes who are also SCORE Toyota Milestone Award winners. Class 5 is also part of this group but no racer qualified this year.

A SCORE Toyota Milestone winner for three straight years, Brian Jeffrey, Acton, Calif., earned a third of this year?s SCORE Toyota True Grit Award purse by winning Class 1-2/1600 for the second time in three years. In 2002, Jeffrey collected the entire $12,000 purse himself as no racers qualified in the other SCORE Toyota True Grit classes.

Also winning part of the 2004 SCORE Toyota True Grit award were Class 10 season point champion Steve Myers, Newport Beach, Calif., and SCORE Lite winner Tom Watson, El Centro, Calif.

Two of the more unique 2004 SCORE Toyota Milestone Award winners are Jason Baldwin, the SCORE Trophy-Truck season champion and Mark Kyle, who finished third in SCORE Lite. Baldwin, Lauguna Beach, Calif., was the only winner this year who drove solo the entire season and Kyle, Austin, Texas, either drove or rode shotgun for every single race mile this season.
