Gonzaga Bay

docg - 4-11-2014 at 07:01 PM

Hi, 1st time posting on this board. I'm headed back down to Gonzaga Bay in a month and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a panga captain. We are staying at Alfonsina's and would like to hit the islands for a day of fishing and diving. the hotel says they can set something up, but I would rather use a local with a good reputation if possible.
Thanks for any advice.

There is no town there. If at Alfonsina's then whoever they arrange may be it? The other campos may give you options but they are 2-10 mile drive away. Willardguy or others here should have current data
. Welcome to Nomad!

Thanks Dave, will see if Willardguy or others have any info.

Confirming, Alfonsina's is just a place to camp and launch your boat. Plus they have a restaurant that is open sometimes. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent place to camp and launch but no panga rentals.

Rented a panga at alfonsinas last fall, too many people for my tin boat. They charged me $200 , not cheap but nothing is. Papas will rent pangas but only if Tony is in camp and that is not often. Dont remeber the captains name, he was OK did not need to know much as told him where I wanted to go .

And the Chupawhatsis.......

We were there about a year ago and you will not have any troubles finding a good guy to take you out.

We caught a ton of fish and had them cleaned and cooked at Alfonsinas. Our capt. joined us for dinner as well.

It was a good time

Sounds good, we will give Antonio a chance to line something up. Thanks for everyone's help!

You can also try asking at Papa Fernadez a bit to the north...the best (??) boat launch is there as well as well as some locals that might have some info.

As gill netters continue to hammer the area it is best you get there sooner than later.

just wanted to follow up with a report. We spent 3 nights at Alfonsinas and two days on the water. Antonio (the Manager) controls the pangas behind the hotel on the Willard Bay side of the spit. The boats are in disrepair to say the least. The day we arrived we saw a group being towed in from engine failure. The next day our boat nearly sank and had to be run a ground to save it. I would not recommend using Antonio or his Captain. On the other hand we were able to line up a boat from El Sacrificio who picked us up at the hotel and took us out for two amazing days of fishing. His name was Jesus and he is only there part time as he lives in Guerrero Negro. Anyway, May is a great time for just about anywhere in Baja!

Cliffy - 5-20-2014 at 01:21 PM

What fish report? Just like you say, "it's all fished out"! Right?

freediverbrian - 5-20-2014 at 04:51 PM

What was the cost for the panga rental?

redhilltown - 5-21-2014 at 12:01 AM

Thanks for the report. What was the catch? May is still in the "wind tunnel" time slot so great you were able to get out.
