Bahia Concepcion Camping Trip in Semana Santa

shari - 4-27-2014 at 08:13 AM

Only once a year, Juan has a week off from the fishing cooperative so like everyone else, we head for Las Bahias to play in the warm water and sun. The day we arrived it was blowing like stink so we stayed in Mulege hoping to eat at the new pizza place dive shop...but dang it all anyway...it was closed...boo hooo.

We headed out in the morning in our little inflatable packed to the gunnels to find a new remote camp spot away from the masses at the public beaches. We found a beautiful little sandy beach on an island with a fantastic natural BBQ that was just perfect for cooking.

the sunrises were breath taking with all the rocks and clear, calm water.

It was so relaxing...so calm compared to our west coast beaches...perfect for sitting back and contemplating the universe.

as the day unfolded, pangas begin to arrive...turns out this beach is where all the tourist boats bring their customers for a day of snorkeling & picknicking. So much for our secluded paradise! So we packed up camp and looked for another quieter beach. This one looked promising....

Nobody visited this beach and it was wonderful...I liked our "closet" rock to hang stuff on. At night we had a great view of the fireworks at one of the beaches too.

There were whale sharks cruising by our beach every day which was super cool as I'd never seen one before.

It was hard to make friends with them because there was soooo much traffic and everyone wanted to see them so every time we would pull up to one, boats, kayaks, jet skis etc would come roaring over and scare the shark off so it disappeared.

Once we managed to approach one and Juan was stoked to dive in and swim with it...albeit he had to swim fast to keep up as they cruise about 5 knots!!!

Juan rescued a frigate bird who was nearly drowned...pretty impressive beak eh! Poor critter nearly bit it...but dried off in the sun for a couple hours and flew away to see another day.

Here are a couple more peeps we shared the beach with.

and our camp mascot Nimo

Our amigo was kind enough to take us diving one day and show us some wonderful spots. My favorite was a fault where hot water bubbled our of the bottom...next time we will cook some eggs on it!

amazing what you can get into an inflatable...back to civilization after a wonderful week on the water.

Our last stop was San Lucas Cove for the traditional Arce family feast...always fun!

It was a splendid week in the sun of snorkeling, relaxing, reading, swimming....ahhhhhh....bajaaaaaaa!

Here is a slide show from our trip

Great photos and trip report, Shari. I'm sure you and Juan had the best of times in my old hangout...and from the photos you've shown, we've visited the same islands over the years.

Seems to be a lot more whale shark activity in the Bay over the last 3-4 years than we ever had before. A great sight to get used to!

P.S. The beach you moved to is a favorite spot for us, too...had many a picnic there. Used to be good chocolates there, too. 2 older panga gents (brothers) used to live there many years ago...and were seen 'paddling' their panga across the bay to get supplies at a roadside tienda.

Have fun in the Bay, you two..Hey Hey!

Thanks for the travelogue, Shari. Doing what you did got me hooked on Conception many years ago and I still am. Nice to see it can still be done, even during Semana Santa. Will be there soon.

Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing the trip.

I've been considering getting an inflatable to take south...this makes it all the more appealing.

thanks everyone for the nice comments on the pictures.

We love our inflatable, it's light so the two of us can pull it up on a beach and easy to get on a trailer and as you can see, it holds a whack of stuff.

Vince...that first beach we were on would be great any other week than semana santa...it was just spectacular and the rock BBQ is a real bonus!

And to think I'm stuck with all this every winter! Looking out from my porch over the bay is just so calming.
I have spent many hours in these same places and never tire of returning as you can always find something new.
Great pics and so happy you enjoyed.
Contrary to the opinions of many, I enjoy the fact the people of Baja come out and enjoy after working hard all year.
I just live here. I'm not here to change it.
