San Francisquito road to LA Bay

TMW - 4-27-2014 at 01:02 PM

Happy to report the road from LA Bay to San Francisquito has been graded and in the best shape I've seen it in many years. The first few miles out of LA Bay are about the same and there are a couple of rough spots along the way but over all in great shape.

Any sign of pavement going south from town? It was reported here they were paving south for some development, but that was maybe more than a year ago?

No sign of any pavement work along the way.

Interesting, we were told that the facilities at San Francisquito was sold for 6 million US dollars. I don't remember if Carlos Slim bought it or not.

Did you go out from San Francisquito via Guillermo Prieto or via El Arco?

TMW - 4-27-2014 at 01:57 PM

We did the coastal route from San Ignacio to El Barril then over to San Francisquito for the night. Then from San Francisquito to LA Bay. Stopped at Pancho's. he had a Canadian there, been there three weeks. Also several fishing boats and families there catching lots of fish, lobster etc.

Over Thanksgiving, I crossed paths with a couple who was leaving Camp Gecko and moving to the pacific side of the peninsula. According to them, the money that was supposed to be spent paving a road to the south bay was instead allocated to complete the new concrete streets, sidewalks, and boat ramp in town. If you have not visited LA Bay within the past year, it's an improvement on the two level road fiasco of the last 5-6 years.

Oh good... that divided street was such a joke!

Great news...it's about time!

I have heard that Carlos Slim and/or mining interests have bought up much of that area around PSF, all the way back to El Arco too. Rumor of a pier for large ships to haul materials in & out too. Time will tell - it's Baja after all . . .

That's interesting that you would mention Carlos Slim and mining. While the road was being graded I attempted to make a trip down to San Rafael for some halibut fishing but we had a flat tire and no spare. We got to the camp where the guys grading the road were and asked for help. They loaded our vehicle on their flat bed trailer and gave us a ride back to bola. On the ride we asked the driver about paving the road and he said that the road will be paved, and also talked about Carlos Slim and some mining interests. I didn't believe him but now you have heard something similar so who knows. They surveyed the road about a year ago and I thought that maybe they would start paving soon.

The road is 80 miles from San Francisquito to LA Bay. The first and main road to El Arco is 10.7 miles from SF with the second road (race course) to El Arco at about 12.5 miles, they join in 4 miles toward El Arco. It's 35 miles from SF to Panchos place. This is from taking the direct road out of SF not the one past the airstrip and by the inlet harbor. Add another mile or so for it.

How long did it take you?

TMW - 4-28-2014 at 09:38 AM

Most of the time we were traveling at 30-35mph easily. I think there were just two rough stops between 15-25 miles from SF and the last 5-6 miles into LA Bay. We stopped at Panchos and at Las Animas.

Anybody actually living at Las Animas Bay at this time?

Barry

There was one place with a camper and appeared to be occupied but no one was there that we could see. Lots of stuff around it as if someone lived there.

Did you check out the mystery walls by Las Animas? http://vivabaja.com/109

TMW - 4-28-2014 at 11:14 AM

We didn't check it out as in going to it but I did point it out to everyone as we stopped to look from a distance.
