Comondu Road

The road from San Javier to the Comondus is in rough shape best done with a 4x4 vehicle. The rains have affected it since last Nov. From the Comondus to San Isidro is in good shape. They have graded about 12+ miles from San Isidro toward the Comondus.

Will do a trip report hopefully next week. 10 days on the road and I finally got home last night. Lots of pictures and lots of off road driving. 6 of us in 3 4x4 trucks. Great weather until the last night camping. Made it to San Juan de Las Pilas and had a great time with Jesus and Lupe up there. Road out to Mulege has been out for 3 years.

I explored a bit coming from San Javier last Winter and I would rate it as more severe than just 4WD. I was riding a high clearance lighter weight dual sport motorcycle and that climb going Northbound about half way there was messed up enough that since I was riding alone, I decided I would bag it and come back with a second rider. The climbing vertical steps with all of the soil washed away are a crank case getter even with a foot of clearance. Maybe with an automatic transmission where you can creep and boulder climb. I dunno. Exhausting at any rate. Do not take greenhorns.

We met two bikers in Comondu that started up the hill out. A few minutes later they came back and headed to hwy 52. For a street bike it's not a good ride, especially with lots of gear. We had no problems going over it in our Nissan and Tacoma 4x4s. Slow yes, but not too slow.

Southbound would not be nearly as much of a problem. I can go down pretty much anything one way or another (yeow!) As I said. I was riding an extremely capable bike with no gear at all and have been riding Baja since 69. I WInter at my house in Mulege and am still finding new places to get screwed up!
