New Costco in La Paz ???

ncampion - 4-30-2014 at 12:29 PM

Can anyone verify this? I heard that Costco is planning on constructing another store in La Paz. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2014 and be completed by November 2014. The location will be behind "Liverpool" department store (same area as Home Depot, Sam's Club and Walmart).

Ahhhh, more evidence that Armageddon is just down the block

It does not surprise me since right now, there is no Costco between Ensenada and Cabo. And given the local demand for Kirkland products such as water and toilet paper (obvious to me that some enterprising fellow buys both in bulk, probably in Ensenada, and has a delivery route all the way down Baja, inasmuch as we find both products in many of the hotels when we travel down).

It might happen, and it might not.

We have actually heard that a Costco was opening in the Liverpool plaza since before the Home Depot even broke ground. (4+ years ago???)

Then it was rumored that it was actually under construction. Turned out to be a casino in the back of the property. (2+ years ago???)

Have you heard this from a new source?

Just my opinion-This is bogus

1. Costco as a corporate policy does not comment on the location of future stores. 2. The current Costco in Cabo is not a high volume store and has not reached anywhere close to capacity- which indicates to me that as a business decision another Costco in the same general area is not warranted. 3. There have been rumors of a new Costco in La Paz for over 7 years, and conversations with Cabo management confirms that they just don't discuss future plans for store locations.

Costco

I was living I Ensenada when Costco arrived when they first opened they were partnered with Commercial Mexicana. Mexican law says if it's made here it has priority over imports. The store stock was sketchy at best and since they bought out commercial's interest it has improved some, we mainly buy paper goods and detergents there and it is and never has ben a barging. since the new tax hike we started shopping at Costco in the U S its cheaper and the quality is better.

CHUPACABRA SIGHTING

"Costco" all but had their doors open in Lazaro Card##as, Michoacan. The chisme was fast and furious.

Then the SAM'S CLUB sign went up.

It takes a bigassed city to support both a Sam's and a Costco. And then median incomes are heavily analyzed (John Booth, Costco, Western Regional Operations). In the case of San Lucas, median incomes OVER RODE the number of potential customers as being important.

Acapulco and Morelia, yes. La Paz? I would find it most surprising.

The Costco parking lot in Cabo has absurdly beautiful view of the ocean.

right - we'll believe it when we see it. Rumors of a Costco have been floating around for years and La Paz already has a Sam's Club and a City Club.

As Apple said, the view from the Cabo Costco is great. Where else can you sit and have a hotdog lunch for $1.50 with a view of lands end?

The view of Land's End and El Arco from the parking lot is really good.

Unless, there are three cruise ships anchored directly in front of the view! It also means that there are 10,000+ tourists jamming every venue/bar/shop/beach in Cabo......

Actually, if you want an even better view, walk/drive across the eight-lane to the Pemex across from Costco. They have a raised planter area on the water side of the station that has a completely unobstructed view of the harbor area.

Since they built that Pemex many years ago, I always wondered why they built that high wall on the sea view side. Seems to me that a wrought iron fence would have been preferable.

That said, while folks are waxing poetic about the view from the Costco parking lot, one can get just about the same view from The Home Depot parking lot. Both obvious tourist attractions that need to be brought to the attention of Tripadvisor!:lol::lol:

My understanding was that no foreign based company could operate in Mexico without a Mexican partner that had at least 51% ownership interest in the venture. For many years we shopped at both Costco and Commercial Mex in Ensenada simply because they were right across the street from each other.

It was interesting to see the difference in the prices of similar items. So now, apparently, Costco of Mexico is a Mexican corporation?

And they're both always filled with shoppers.

Don't know if Costco will be there or not, just reporting something that I heard.

My car got cleaned out in 2011 in the Cabo San Loco Wal-Mart parking lot. Smashed a window, stole everything inside, opened the trunk, stole a brand new Goodrich spare tire and scissors jack and 12-volt impact wrench and an expensive 12-volt compressor. Then they popped the hood, and stole the brand new USA Wal-Mart battery.

Not bad for a 2-hour rainy August Saturday afternoon. Actually it was a cloudburst day. Wal Mart would not let me use their telephone to call for a mechanic.

Nice Place Cabo. Wish You Were There...
