last weekend we had a couple so close up at K40 that you could hit em with a pitching wedge! check out this story about whales close in laguna beach. http://www.petethomasoutdoors.com/

The northbound mom/calf Pairs off CA are often very close to shore. Sometimes they are so close to the beaches, people don't realize they are seeing full size whales. Here in San Diego they are used to seeing them a few miles offshore during the southbound migration.

The southern stragglers are probably juveniles who don't have parenting responsibilities and are just hanging around having a good time.

I've seen that leaping behavior near Salsipuedes, right below the scenic highway. 2 or 3 playing & leaping for nearly an hour, but that Was in January while they were southbound. I think they like that Curve along the coast, away from the open ocean.

Enjoy them while you can!

funny you mention shallow, once at OB we were surfing in june? and all of a sudden the water started boiling!!!! it seemed like a submarine was breaching RIGHT IN THE LINEUP!

turns out it was a 20' grey whale that swam thru the pier headed south.

freaked out a bunch of guys. it was no more than 10 feet deep!!!!
