First time to La Paz- Espirito Santo

baja99 - 5-7-2014 at 09:31 PM

Will be in La Paz for 2-4 days in July. Yes, I know it will be hot. :) Looking for some advice. I'd love to spend a day kayaking and snorkeling around Espírito Santo. There will be five of us. Best bet to book a day trip through an outfitter type? I have talked to Mar y Aventuras. They have 2 day trips. $75 per person and $95 per person to add a swim-with-seals stop....is thus the going rate?

Another day fishing. What can I expect to pay for a boat for 4-5 people?

Finally, best beaches? The less crowded the better!

Thanks for any advice/recommendations/thoughts!

La Paz is awesome in July... Sleep may be difficult if no AC and you are not used to tropical weather.

We had a great week in La Paz in 2012 with La Paz residents Baja Tripper and Zully showing us the sites. See my trip report photos for ideas.

Link to 2012 trip is below in my signature...

Tecolote beach will be your least crowded.

You are wasting money to have a tour guide handle the recreation around Espiritu Santo island.
Stop by the tourist office at the north end of the malecon (in front of the marina) and buy the required permit. Last I remember, they were less than 100 pesos. Then head over to Tecolote beach (follow the malecon road until it ends). There are several kayak rental places there as well as tours to Espiritu Santo island and swim with the seals. They generally throw in a pic nic on a beach on the island as part of the package. The water should be in the high 70's for temperature.

Great trip report David K! We are hoping to do a similiar trip!

Udo...that's what I was wondering...if we could just show up and find soneone to take us and some rental kayaks out to the islands. Of course, then we are relying on them to come back and get us! Also wondering if we could get a better deal with one of the tour companies if we just showed up. $75 a person for the tour of Espírito Santo ($375 for 5), or $95 for 2 islands. ($475 for 5). I thought that sounded high...but maybe that's the going rate?

Thanks for the responses!

Unless you are young and strong the island is too far to paddle to.

DK is correct. It's too far to kayak. There are any number of panga options here in La Paz, at the beach in Tecolote, and in La Ventana. Plenty of opportunity to haggle. Just show up, no preplanning or prepaying needed. Things are much more laid back here than where you live. Send a u2u, i'll check with my neighbor for a panga if you like.
