FIRES in SAN DIEGO COUNTY I-5 & 15 slow or closed today

David K - 5-14-2014 at 02:40 PM

Best to avoid travel through San Diego as we have fires in Carlsbad (near Palomar Airport Rd), Camp Pendleton, Bonsall, Fallbrook and Escondido reported. I-5 was closed and is now badly backed up. I would say all main roads are in bad shape. Hwy. 78 is at a crawl as well.

This photo taken about an hour ago from hilltop near La Costa (Melrose/ Rancho Santa Fe Rd) towards the west. Legoland evacuated...

Bajaboy - 5-14-2014 at 02:44 PM

The fire at College Blvd and River Road is burning in the San Luis Rey River bed --- just a couple miles from where my son and family live. I just talked with him and he said it seems that the Santa Ana winds are dying down, which is a good thing for fighting the fires.

What I found on the San Diego local NBC news website is that there are evidently 7 different fires. I hope the winds stay down.

sd - 5-14-2014 at 04:29 PM

I am on the 15 freeway just south of Fallbrook. Radio is reporting freeway is closed. We move 5 feet every few minutes. Made a quick trip south of Tecate Mexico this morning, just a 10 minute border wait going north when I crossed at 1:00

Pompano - 5-14-2014 at 04:37 PM

FOX reporting more breaking news....Fires are forcing evacuation of nuclear power plant. Many homes reported destroyed now...over 30. Dry conditions and easterly winds are not helping. What a disaster.

blackwolfmt - 5-14-2014 at 04:40 PM

Been watchin on CBS 8, The spot fires are just CRAZY, I noticed a few times when they were spraying some of the tile roofs with water it looked like them tiles were not very fireproof?? just kept flammin away, Peace & good luckhttp://www.cbs8.com/story/25504932/bernardo-fire-burns-300-acres

My wife was over at the Carlsbad fire earlier. I'll post some photos soon.

I'm about 2 miles from the San Luis Rey river fire in O'side. No evacuations in my area. I've noticed the wind has calmed and is now out of the west, cooling things down a tad.

From my house I can see the Pendleton Fire and it's a beast.

I can also see the San Marcos fire plume and that's pretty gnarly as well. Lots of homes over there.

Great job firefighters and local/county agency's!!!

It's gonna be hotter tomorrow, says the weather report.

David K - 5-14-2014 at 06:42 PM

Well... shortly after posting, a new fire started in the hills right south if where I live. I was told to evacuate so the kitties and I joined with Baja Angel in a parking lot. We are watching the flames now.

Are you east or west of the fire in the San Luis Rey river bed? My son and family are about 2 miles east. We very much hope the winds stay DOWN.

I'm 1.5-2 miles SOUTH of the San Luis Rey river bed where the fire is. From the looks of the smoke plume, I'm guessing the firefighters are making progress.

What I saw last was a shift of the winds back towards the east from the ocean to the inland. Hopefully it'll burn back over itself and provide some relief. But that's in the direction of your son and family, depending on where they are. Things seem to be getting under control though Diana, I wouldn't worry too much.

The O'side fire chief just said the Luis Rey fire is about to burn towards the north, says channel 7 literally 1 minute ago. I'll keep you posted.

Can't really trust any reports right now, including mine.

He and family are just north of Guajome Park and he also assures me that I should not worry.

Of course I won't worry, yes, I won't worry, well, my 11 year old grandson called me and said not to worry, and I lied and told him grandma would not worry --- OF COURSE I WILL WORRY.

But I also know if it became necessary they would get out and all I care about is their personal safety!

Thanks for any updates as they do at times try to protect grandma!

Big bummer. Arson is suspected. :fire:

Bajaboy - 5-14-2014 at 08:17 PM

What is unusual is the weather for this time of year....normally we are faced with May gray but not this year. It's been unusually hot this year. It seems like it's getting hotter and hotter...but that would just be a coincidence....

Ateo - 5-14-2014 at 08:18 PM

Firefighters rock. That's all I gotta say. Horrific conditions. Multiple fires. Total cooperation between fire agencies. Could've been worse. So far, no deaths.

Ateo - 5-14-2014 at 08:20 PM

Yep Bajaboy, as a surfer, I usually write April and May off and sometimes part of June as "gray and cold" due to the nasty winds. Not this year. It's hot as hell with none of that onshore wind. Just an observation.

-edit to note wind not onshore like usual this time of year.

A few weeks ago I was coming down from Mt. Laguna when I was stopped on I8 due to a fire raging up the side of the highway. I sat there in awe watching the planes drop retardant on the flames while the fire crews lined up. The fire crews looked like an army of ants marching up the steep hill side with all of their gear. My sincere thanks go out to all the firefighters out there!

...and the firefighters aren't all Firemen. The ones that you see on TV wearing red coveralls and manning the hoes and shovels ahead of the fire front are prisoners on work release.

No Motoged, I am for the first time in my life, at a loss to explain the claim that an arsonist is lower on the pecking order than a child molester as posted by another Nomad.

tripledigitken - 5-15-2014 at 01:40 PM

A report on TV just mentioned the huge Palomar Hospital/aka Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, is at risk from the eastward advance of the San Marcos fire.

Who said anything like what you are claiming? Please try to read and quote correctly. Nothing was said about a pecking order --no such claim was made,

Now, just give it a bit of thought. If you were locked inside a cell, would you want an arsonist as your cell mate?

Again, all I said was that he would have a bad time--inmates and staff are not fond of people who like to set fires for obvious reasons.

Back to the topic. I hope that this is not the beginning of a long and difficult fire season. Every time our town siren blasts, we turn on the scanner --unless it's noon.

Folks we have evacuated from San Marcos motel to a family member home in San Diego. Fire spreading from San Marcos to Escondido. As we drove south on I-15 we saw flames near Palomar Hospital and all of Escondido valley filled with smoke.

dasubergeek - 5-16-2014 at 09:30 AM

Stone Brewery was evacuated. They've lifted some of the evacuation orders, especially on Del Dios Highway and south of 78 (as of a few minutes ago).

The wind shifted and you can smell the wildfires as far north as LA County.

We fought The Witch Fire outside of Vally Center in I believe 2009. The big difference was that fire occurred in late October, Socals normal fire season, crazy to see this fire activity this early. Our fire season has arrived almost two months early with a record setting fuel moisture deficit. Its amazing how fast the native vegetation grows back in the Socal foothills creating the same volatile energy release component. Be prepared, unfortunately we are just getting started. Hope all things considered that all of you are OK. Be safe

dasubergeek - 5-18-2014 at 07:12 PM

On the way in to Old Man's today they asked us specifically if we were carrying any kind of fire-making device. I said I had a camp stove and one can of gas for making fish tacos. They laughed and let me in.

EnsenadaDr - 5-19-2014 at 08:23 AM

Drove from Tecate to Ensenada yesterday afternoon, no evidence of burned brush or fire remnants, clear, blue skies all the way down only visible smoke was haziness over Ensenada Bay.

David K - 5-19-2014 at 08:52 AM

Came home yesterday(Sunday)... The mountain between us in San Marcos and Escondido is all blackened. When you drive I-15 through Escondido you can see the whole east side of the mountain from the new hospital south to Del Dios are burned. The fire came right to the edge of this apartment complex and the university parking lot we are next to. No issues at all in here. I closed up the windows tight when I evacuated Wednesday.
