Highway Robbery

BajaBlanca - 5-20-2014 at 06:43 AM

From the Western Onion:

Aguila Bus Assaulted 17 May From La Paz To Todos Santos - The 1 pm bus leaving La Paz was assaulted by 2 young men with guns and 2 other young men waiting in the car, that they parked kind of in the highway just outside of La Paz, pretending they had a technical problem. They stole jewelry, cash and technical devices such as computers, phones, etc. from every passenger. - Beatrice
*****************************************************************

This is very scary news indeed! I just took the bus with the college scholarship girls not two weeks ago. I would have been devastated had my ipad been taken. I think this is one good reason to support those guys washing cars, or selling stuff on the steets or peddling in a restaurant. It saves us from this kind of danger. Better to try and make an honest living. We bought a palm rose from a guy yesterday, I will post a picture later as it is exquisite.

Well, that is not good news for tourism! Hope the authorities control it before it (hwy robbery) becomes common.

I went to read news on the onion, and see website has not been updated since March. You sure this is news? Or is it old news new to you?
Onion go out of business?

Not sure buying chiclets from street vendors is the solution...

Udo - 5-20-2014 at 07:38 AM

I don't think the Baja Western Onion is old news. I get a daily digest, and all but the ads is always new.

bajalearner - 5-20-2014 at 09:33 AM

I don't know the MX law so I am asking; if a victim on the bus was able to overpower the robber and kill him, would that person be prosecuted?

A few yrs. back, a Bus was robbed by C Constitution.
Read an account of a TJ resident getting involved in
stopping a robbery, the robber then sued/ or the good
samaritain was charged with injuring the robber. Straying a bit, a cruise ship stopping in
a port in Costa Rica, some folks from the ship shopping
ashore were robbed at gunpoint, a member of the group
came up from behind the robber, had him in a choke hold, the robber dies as a result, local police rendered a verdict
on the spot, justifiable

Middle of the night, tep-son was on a bus from TJ to Cabo, stopped by military. Everyone was told to get off the bus while they searched. When he returned to the bus he went back to sleep, but when he checked, all of his $$ had been taken. Assumed it was by the soldiers!

bajalinda - 5-20-2014 at 11:47 AM

Yes, it's today's issue of the Baja Western Onion (issues come out on Tuesdays and Fridays)

Would be nice to have more info. What does "they parked kind of in the highway" mean? Were the bad guys partially blocking the road? Why did the bus driver stop? I tried to look up (online) back issues from the weekend of a couple of BCS newspapers, but had no luck - could only get today's issue.

It would depend on who the dead scumbag was related to.

What's the connection?

Please, clarification of "scumbag". Children of the Corn or familia del Gobernador. Too bad Dirty Harry wasn't aboard! By now, they must have caught these Crystalistas! How many of us travel with "protection"--I carry Wasp Spray to soothe their eyes! Prolly had no bullets. Tio

Bajahowodd - 5-20-2014 at 05:00 PM

As if this sort of random crime doesn't happen all over the world, including in the US.

There is virtually no way to prevent it unless we choose the become a total lock down society where you are scanned and searched everywhere.

The incident to which Blanca refers is really only important if it recurs over and over.

Otherwise, just go live your life.

bajalearner - 5-20-2014 at 05:09 PM

It does happen everywhere. I want to hear about it so I am aware of the possibilities. Life in the big city...as the saying goes.

Frank - 5-20-2014 at 05:20 PM

Sure does make for a tough decision to stop and help a broken down vehicle. Accidents, if we are among the first ones on scene or there is rescue/medical needs, we always stop. I guess it's all going to fall back on that all important "does it feel right?"

motoged - 5-20-2014 at 06:15 PM

When I traveled by bus on the mainland last year, some bus-lines took video of each passenger and asked for identification....and I think one place used a metal detector for all passengers as they boarded the bus....this was between Mexico city and Michoacan.

Good security measures....

The old "car broke down" is always a risk...

Sad to hear that it happened.

Sound advice, but when a guy brings a gun to innocent people, I prefer to have something for defense and an offense.

BajaBlanca - 5-21-2014 at 05:23 PM

Rec'd from La Paz Gringo group today:

Hello everybody, I contacted the person who posted first this news here on the blog.
I don't publish her data for privacy respect but she owns owns a hotel at Todos Santos and she replied to me the following:

Dear Claudia
I am also very concerned about this assault as many of our hotel guests travel by bus.
In fact, just 5 minutes ago I received a phone call from one of the co-owners of EcoBajaTours-Aguila, Diego Sanchez Diaz and he is very concerned about this situation, even more though as nobody informed him about this incident. But he promised me that he will personally take care and investigate and get in contact with our hotel guest that was one of the passengers on the bus that got assaulted.

I replied to her asking if her Guest did noticed the Police or not, as until now no media are aware about this fact!
So, will see if more news come out....
Claudia

Everyday, all kinds of trouble but there is no evidence, report, nothing about this story anywhere but heresay from one person Beatrice who wasn't there. If it were true then there would be many victims, many reports, many denuncias, police reports, news, something, not nothing.

Are we to believe, the bus was robbed and then no one called the police or any report except they called Beatrice and gave her a report? There would be a report by any one of the victims.

The road from la Paz to Todos Santos is no longer a little road it is a multilane hi way with regular traffic. There are many types of police and military there, fed, state, city, military.

Maybe the victims did call the police and the police forgot to tell you.
Maybe the victims did not call the police, because they think (know) the police rarely do anything.
Maybe it never made it into the news media.
Maybe there was a cover up.

Why are you so insistent in saying it never happened?

This just in from the Baja Western Onion * 5-23-2014
*************************************************

It Happens From Time To Time... - Someone sends us a notice about a local crime without additional info to verify the facts. In this latest case, we let a story about an Aquila bus robbery between La Paz and Todos Santos slip by without being able to verify it elsewhere. We received a fair number of concerned Emails about this from our readers. We also notified the poster about the concerns raised but have not yet heard back. So far, outside of a FaceBook posting with the same information we received, no one has corroborated the story and we can only assume it was some kind of hoax. Our sincere apologies for reprinting something alarming, apparently with no basis in fact.

This is a reminder to us, and to our readers. We'll try to be more cautious before reprinting any more "stories" that can't be confirmed. We often don't have the time it takes to vet rumours and we promise to simply delete them instead. So, please, take the the time to help us verify these kinds of stories before bothering to send them to the Baja Western Onion. As always, thank you so much for your continued support and understanding. - Alan and Debra, The Baja Western Onion

Why does the onion publish "news" without verifying? I guess the editors and publisher never read chapter 1 of "journalism for dummies."

BajaBlanca - 5-23-2014 at 09:44 AM

Well, the good news is, it did not happen! I am ver relieved! Heck, for a minute I thought we were going to be another Brazil with chaos in the streets.

Sorry that the mistake was made

Glad it was a hoax

Hook - 5-23-2014 at 09:54 AM

Well, dont think that it CAN'T happen. It seems like we read about one or two every couple years over here.

Funny thing is, the bus driver has sometimes been implicated in being part of the robbery.

There was also a case about 3-4 years ago where gunmen forced a Tufesa bus off the highway and simply shot and killed the bus driver and fled w/o harming or robbing the passengers. THAT was suspicious!!!

There was much speculation that he refused to carry (or had knowlege of) a shipment and was silenced because of it. The bus was one of those that crosses the border and ends up in Tucson or Phoenix.

BCSTech - 5-23-2014 at 10:03 AM

Sorry, when I deleted my double post, it somehow deleted both of my posts, which just goes to make my point; Mistakes happen. :)

As I was writing, after 7 years of publishing 100's of issues and 1,000's of articles, not ashamed to admit we're not infallible.

OK, my NRA buddies. If you were on a bus and were met with a surprise hwy robbery what would you whip out? My Rottie is not with me and my Karate skills have diminished so what do you suggest? Just curious how many Nomads are carrying a Piece? Tio

Many years ago learned to carry my real money somewhere other than my wallet! I agree wholeheartedly it is better to peacefully cooperate, in most cases. Lo demas, my Rottweiler/wifereiller is preferred, ha, ha. Living here in BCS I'm just happy it didn;t really happen. Whoever gave out the story deserves.... Tio

what Western Onion said:
" We'll try to be more cautious before reprinting any more "stories" that can't be confirmed. We often don't have the time it takes to vet rumours and we promise to simply delete them instead."

Alan, you do for the TS area what Cheryl does for the East Cape, and everyone totally appreciates it. When something important occurs, it is extremely important that word gets out right away. We all depend on it. Sometimes there is not time to investigate to get all the facts, that generally comes later. Mistakes happen. Keep up the good work!

BTW, to set the record straight, we don't presume to be "Journalists:" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalism.

We manage a local Email bulletin board/"Peso Shopper." Big difference.

Dummies, maybe. Journalists, no.
