MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH A TECATE TRAFFIC COP!

Udo - 6-6-2014 at 05:08 PM

yesterday, (a Thursday) i had my first encounter with one of the infamous Tecate motorcycle cops

I was a pleasant one:

I rolled through the stop light just under the bridge as you enter downtown Tecate.
I saw the motor cop out of the corner of my eye. I don't know where he drove through to turn around to go after me. But he did manage to pull me over as I was about to enter the short traffic crossing lane. About a mile and a half later!

He stated that I had "rolled through a stop sign" at the bridge...which was eight stop signs ago.

He asked for my DL and registration and to follow him to the police station around the corner, to pay for the ticket.

I then asked him, politely, which stop sign did I roll through?
He then described it to me.
My statement to him (in Spanish) "how many stop signs ago was that?"
I then went on to say that I can only remember about 5 stop signs, and any more than that, I could not remember. And at all stop signs I usually count to three, unless there is someone behind me.

Then I proceeded to explain to him what happens in Mexico if one makes a full stop at an intersection...one gets rear-ended! Mainly because NO ONE STOPS @ 4 WAY STOPS.

I showed him the photo of my rear-ender in La Paz last year. So I exaggerated a bit after I showed him the photos on my iPhone. I told him I already had been rear-ended three times in Ensenada, once in Cabo and once in La Paz.

I then asked him...if this were to happen to him, what would he do?

OK...no ticket...have a nice day!

Bravo Udo

Wait. You "Rolled through a stoplight?". not a stop sign?

Good one Udo... you handled it like a champ... however, did you "roll through" a stop light (while it was red)?

In Tecate, near the turn from the main road to the line road by the fence, it pays to be careful. There's a police station right there.

The light just under the bridge is always blinking red. Yes, it is technically a light, but officially a stop sign.

When the cop asked me to originally follow him to the police station,I said..."the one around the corner?"

I had my first encounter with a Tecate MC cop just over a week ago.

A wave, a nod and a smile!

I don't need to say what was going through my mind!!!

Since nobody here has ever tried to talk a US cop out of a ticket...
