Many good restaurants. Our favorites were Tacos Don Felix and El Correo.
The toy museum is outstanding.MMc - 6-9-2014 at 01:35 PM
Isn't that where soulpatch lives these days?DianaT - 6-9-2014 at 01:51 PM
Yes, it is where soulpatch is living now so would be the most current on restaurants, etc.
In the area, Atotonilco is worth a visit for the history. We love Guanajuato, but take public transportation and the town is a nightmare for driving.
One of the prettiest plazas anywhere. Deloras Hidalgo is nice and the drive through the mountains from Guanajuato to Deloras Hidalgo is beautiful.
Pozos to see and outside of Pozos to see the old Spanish Hacienda ruins.
Just to name a few places.vandenberg - 6-9-2014 at 01:56 PM
Many good eateries. Several right on the plaza in front of the cathedral
When in that area make sure not to miss Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo, only a short ride away.BajaGeoff - 6-9-2014 at 02:33 PM
I enjoyed spending time at Mama Mia just off the central plaza. This was about 14 years ago though...not sure if it is still a good spot.vandenberg - 6-9-2014 at 03:31 PM
Bajablanca.
We spent some time at hotel Quinta Loreto, within walking distance of downtown, internet, next to artesian, fruit, flower and veggie market. Easy
parking, which is hard to find in those colonial cities.
Reasonable and with access to everything.
Have fun!!danaeb - 6-9-2014 at 05:54 PM
This is fun and benefits a good cause. It's also a great way to see behind the walls in San Miguel:
In the area, Atotonilco is worth a visit for the history.
Beautiful town Atotonilco. At least in 1979 when we stopped there for menudo on a Sunday morning while driving up to San Julian. My best buddy since
we were 10 years old was born in San Julian and we went to visit his familia. What a big familia, his dad was the oldest of 17 kids and his mother was
the youngest of 14 kids. That was another beautiful mountain town. Back then the asphalt stopped about a mile outside of town. Good times.
Always wanted to go to San Miguel de Allende. Someday.BajaBlanca - 6-11-2014 at 04:57 PM
Soulpatch, lets meet up! We shall be there between june 28 and July 6, hope you are around.
I will check out the quinta, out of town and internet sounds good.
Thanks everyone!BajaBlanca - 6-11-2014 at 04:58 PM

Wendy & I "left our hearts in S.M.A. !!!!!! arrived via bus from Mexico City. Took cab to downtown at the jardine. Across the street from the
jardine & down maybe half block, we found this really nice older hotel (name is lost somewhere in there) Price was right then. We stayed a week,
and if anyone visiting there has Texas relatives, you most likely will run into them, as it is overrun with Texans!!!! Texas license plates
everywhere!!! Tons of things to do, and plenty of restaurants. Report back how the vacation went. We can relive it again through you guys. Enjoy.
After thought. The owner while we were there asked us where we lived in the U.S. and we told him Oregon. He remarks, Oh, we'd love to see Oregon.
Would you be interested in trading two weeks of "our home here" for two week at your home?" It blew us away, and we are experienced travelers. Yes.
We are still thinking about it.BajaBlanca - 6-27-2014 at 01:20 PM
About to board! Let the fun begin!toneart - 6-27-2014 at 02:46 PM
Blanca,
You know my history in SMA! I lived there for several years in the early '80s. Had a studio gallery with my then woman, Glenna Rabasa, a great oil
painter and sculptor. I did stained and fused glass. (We later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and opened the Hardwick/Rabasa Gallery right behind The
Oldest House and The Oldest Church, across the street from The Pink Adobe Restaurant).
In San Miguel, we had a home on the property called "Happy Valley". Even the locals called it that, in English. The property was beautiful! It ran
uphill, was tree covered and had pathways that wended their way throughout. It was the setting for many group shows with local artists, both Mexican
and Gringo. The work hung from trees and dotted the paths.
The home was a beautiful old adobe tannery. All of the rooms were connected and descended downhill. None of the rooms had doorways in between. You had
to go out one and descend or ascend to enter the next one. At the very bottom was the bathroom complete with toilet and shower. It was formerly a
chapel and still has the cross above the entrance; talk about a religious experience...
I was also the trumpet player and doubled on Latin Percussion, in a band called "Los Downbeats". We played Straight Ahead Jazz and Salsa. The patrons
danced on the big Refectory tables. Oh, that woman in the red dress .... This
was at Mama Mia's which Geoff mentioned earlier.
Look up the saxophone player, Salamon. Also, find Bobby Kapp, a drummer and singer. They were in the band and are still playing there in town. Tell
them "Hello" for me. Say hello to Carlos and Blanca, the owners, if they are still there. Also say hello to Luis Gazca, a very good trumpet player who
now lives and performs in SMA. I knew him in San Francisco in the '60s and later in Mulege a few years ago. Caution; he will talk your head off.
Doc Severinsen, bandleader of The Johnny Carson Show, whom I do not know, is now living there too.
Of course, sit in The Jardine (the central plaza) and listen to the cacophony of all the birds, traffic, church bells and people.
I was last there 10 years ago, so my information is dated.
Have a great trip. We want a report! Hi to Les.

I fear that anyone who does not fall in love with San Miguel and the other magnificent highland cities is a bit short on soul, IMHO
