San Juanico cantina CLOSED again

brewer - 6-9-2014 at 11:34 AM

Just heard notice that the cantina is now closed, barbed wired off. Feds shut them down. I hope the campground is still open, I'm heading there in a couple weeks.

Anyone here know why?

Edit for contact info for the guy who may or may not run the joint?

My neighbors are headed down there in a week. Four families. 22 people. 11 surfers. Good times.

Most of the posts are pretty old Matt... I think since Carlos Fiesta died and Juan del Rio also stopped posting here, a lot has gone down hill???

Go to Christi's Tacos or the Burro. Bummer to see the cantina close again. They have some legit food in there.

bajario - 6-10-2014 at 05:52 AM

I went in the summer of 2010 and 2012. I remember it being closed both times. Camping was available though. Burro worked just fine for grub and grog. I'm headed back the end of Julio.

Glad to hear the food is legitimate. Not a fan of illegitimate food.

Cantina is a bit more than closed.

I sure hope the restrooms are still open for all the bluff campers!
Otherwise, I fear an early season bloom of the white desert lily

Ateo - 6-15-2014 at 12:30 PM

Did someone burn it (palapa) down again? I helped put a fire out there back in 2010 or 2011. We were sitting on the balcony of our house drinking beers and saw the fire break out. We grabbed a hose and fire extinguisher and drove over there. After it was put out I wondered if I had just gotten in the way of an arsonist. So much drama involved over the campgrounds, I figured next time I'd just watch it burn.

woody with a view - 6-15-2014 at 01:35 PM

we saw 75+ boards heading south while we drove home yesterday.

school must be out again.....:barf:

No this time somebody used a dump truck with a steel cable to yank the main concrete support pillar down in the middle of the night.

Barf is right. :(

Word is out that Baja is "safe" again... Stoked for the people who will get more business from surf tourism driving the coast, but not that stoked on the surfers who don't have any clue on Baja etiquette ;)

Yeah....and no pulling down palapas between sets, eh !? :O

Lee - 6-16-2014 at 03:00 PM

Why would an arsonist torch the cantina and what's up with the damage done? Must have missed that post.

woody with a view - 6-16-2014 at 03:20 PM

sean Collins was part of a group that wanted to sell lots and close access to the point/campers. the cantina has a 25 year lease that sc's crew is trying to break. looks like they did it.

these are the same kooks who sold out and promoted every swell via surfline.com and now want to own the point(s) and keep out the masses......

I'm sure there is more to it, but you get the idea.

Scorpion Bay Cantina Torn Down

marial - 6-16-2014 at 08:24 PM

We showed up to Scorpion Bay around June 8th , 2014, to find the cantina closed off with barbed wire, Federales standing guard, and "private property signs". We heard from the other campers that men came in the middle of the night to put up the barbed wire. They also tried to pull down the cantina with a truck but did not succeed. Some of the campers thought they saw the men bring gasoline so the campers left in case there was a fire.

A few nights later, the dump truck and men returned, but with chain saws this time. They used the chain saws to cut each supporting beam till each beam was just a thread. Then the dump truck pulled the cantina down with a cable. The men laughed and cheered at the demolished structure.

The bathrooms no longer work (no power so no water.) People are still camping on the bluffs. But don't expect internet or prepared meals.

NOTICE

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

Unfortunately, there has been a property invasion at the camp ground and the Cantina was taken over and demolished. At the moment the flush toilets are not working, the internet is not operational and there is no electricity. Manuel and Juan Jose are there taking care of the area. The palapas are open and the house and suite are open. We are setting up the water truck to dispense water. Bring your shower bag. God willing, this will get sorted out too.

There are many photo hosting sites, Photobucket.com is one used by many here, it is free for basic membership and very cheap for advanced.

1) Create an album for your trip or subject on Photobucket.

2) Click Upload (top center) to transfer photos from your PC folder to your Photobucket album.

3) Click on the gear symbol on the right corner of the box you see on the screen...

4) Select 800 (full size) or 640 (large size) for Nomad posting...

100x75 is the Avatar size, fyi.

5) Click SAVE!

6) Select photos you want to share on Nomad (or other forums) by pressing the Choose Photos & Videos button (or for the entire folder of photos, click Choose Folder).

Once done with uploading photos, make your post here on Baja Nomad and add photos using the IMG link from the choices of links for each photo in your album. Copy and paste that link in your Nomad thread, double spacing between links. Add a caption to the photo if desired... Click Preview Post to check your post... if okay, click Post Reply.

Greed often ruin the good things, eh?

Pretty soon the Californian owners will put up fences, build their little vacation pads out of sustainable materials, and entertain their insufferable friends from OC. Soon their guests will be posting questions on this board, like "where can I buy organic veggies and fair trade coffee and in san juanico?"

Karmic retribution will be the house robberies that liberate their fancy boards, ATVs and flat screen TVs.

In 20 years the house owners will be on this board complaining about some new mega resort that will ruin san juanico, not self aware enough to realize that the resort will be the second ruining, and they were the first.

Good thing there will only be 13 of us next month with maybe two surfers. Not afraid to be alone but enjoy relaxing with family and friends in settings other than a backyard BBQ.

I wouldn't mind a nice vacay pad on the point.............Its inevitable to happen, Im very surprised we have been able to camp as long as we have here.......I hate to admit it, but its 2014, cash talks and us gringos camping here with million dollar views spending $100 a week doesn't seem like its doing much for San Juanico, but oh well, there are lots of places on the planet to see

I think this is how the Mexicans look at it, economically the campo is an underutilized resource. Development will bring in big $ for the community. If Ruben can find a way to negotiate for both, better yet.

And if you can't count the members of your group on one hand, you have too many people with you and are at risk of over taxing the limited resources we all have to share down there. If you want to travel with a large group that is what Disneyland is for.

easy there, Chris! just cuz you got your spots all set up at the busiest spots around doesn't mean you can start calling the shots. A LOT of us have been going into SA & SJ since the early 80's and have watched them turn into a surf ghetto..... we all want solitude but you have staked your claim at the 2 busiest spots, depending on the time of year.

just sayin.....

Nice.
My wife has many framed concert handbills from her days hanging and working at the Avalon Ballroom for Chet Helms. Many of them were done by Rick Griffin. Highly recommend the article in TSJ.

Sean Collins invented surf forecasting to the masses. he made millions and want(ed) to keep those same masses from encroaching on a spot he had his eyes on. burn out the legal leasee so you can sell off the dirt to the highest bidder?

i'm glad he didn't see his nefarious plan come to fruition......

Diickheads from San Diego and the OC flocking everything up. The list of names is revealing. flock them. They will get theirs. Karma eventually evens the score.
