If you want to go 12 volt, then you might consider a bilge pump, available from almost any marine store worth its salt.

Some of them work really well.

There were some "D" cell operated ones a few years ago - worked well. Today I just "drink the water" so don't bother with the 5 gal bottles. Don't
remember where the pumps were available tho.
