Per my Mexican co-worker, the place to exchange is the yellow quonset hut in San Ysidro for the best rate. I always go there. But I'm leaving
tomorrow and was just thinking of exchanging in San Felipe, 1k $. How much could I expect to be out of by doing that? It would just be so much more
convenient.

I don't have a specific answer.
I have exchanged dollars for pesos at Pemex at a loss for convenience. The rate this week in Viscaino was 11.5 : 1. It cost me $6.50 USD in tax and
bank charges to extract 2k pesos from my US debit card at the bank in Viz. the same day. I've bought my initial Pesos at Costco near the border the
last few times, combined with last minute shopping. Have a great trip!

Costco in Chula Vista or the place on the main road near the huge flag in Ensenada - either one has worked well for me. I'm thinking the Costco since
you're heading to San Felipe.

I always check the rate at gas stations...saw one last week with 12.5 so more than I get at the bank. Sometimes it's good to get rid of those dollars
on gas if the station offers a good rate.

Costco, Ensenada, doesn't exchange money. If they do, it's news to me. They do, however, give a decent rate for purchases.
If the bank rate that day is known, the competitive Casas de Cambio will charge 2% =/- .

the rate at the border last week was 12.6 no commission
you have to do the math
if you get 11.5 for 1000 dollars you lose 1100 pesos

The current bank exchange rate (13.02) is what you get if you use your ATM card.
Try to find an affiliated bank US/Mexico, and you'll be refunded the 25 pesos for the withdrawal.
Note: many banks are much higher than that.
