I'm answering my own question about hours of operation for the observatory. They are open seven days a week. Hours are 10:00-1:00 and 2:00-3:00

Maybe a half dozen years ago, mi esposa and I went up to the observatory - I was shocked that pavement almost made it to the top (my last trip up there was 0% pavement). The parking area is down the hill from the observatory, and as I recall, we had to walk maybe 1/2 mile or more to the top. We lucked out on the way down - a University student from Ensenada was driving down and gave us a hitch in the back of his pickup, to the parking area. Big trees and great views to the east.

Road is paved all the way and they let you park right at the observatory. They escort you up and down the mountain as a group.

In 2000, the last 1.5 miles were paved, all the rest (60 miles) was dirt.

In 1984, it was all dirt. We had to walk the last 1.5 miles and the clouds were so thick, no view, even of Diablo Mountain.

Here was in 1978, following the Score Baja Internacional (500), that we viewed north of Mike's Sky Rancho... before the big observatory was built:

In October, 1972, we drove right to the end... Great views... I was 15:
