I have posted several times about how bad it is to buy your fishing licenses up north but today I got really good information about why that is a
problem. The government agency involved in all fishing, commercial and recreational, is SAGARPA. Because the commercial fishing guys were a very
powerful lobby, the sport fishing industry normally got the short end of the stick in terms of conservation, sensible laws, and enforcement. In Baja
California (north) and the rest of Mexico, that is still the same situation, but in Baja California Sur (Guerrero Negro south) PESCA split off from
SAGARPA and formed FONMAR, which represents the interests of sport fishing. Because of the strong influence of sport fishing from Cabo to the state
line, we now have our own agency which is trying to watch out for our specific interests. Now they do not walk on water and we probably will not lose
the seiners and longliners overnight, but they were very instrumental in stopping the legalizing of commercial dorado fishing.
I am directly involved in 4 or 5 local tournaments and have worked side by side with these people and am happy to report that they not only are
financially supporting the sport fishing tournaments, but they roll up their sleeves and do a lot of the work. In addition, they are keeping
accurate records of fish caught, information on anglers, size of boats, etc., which gets fed into the main office in La Paz. This information is
going to go a long ways toward helping us make the case for sport fishing interests and resultant economic impact.
So please make sure that if you are going to be fishing in BCS that you do not buy your license online, through your travel club, in Ensenada (as some
have suggested), but instead support the future of sport fishing in BCS and buy your license here.
It used to be pretty inconvenient to buy a license as you had to go to a store, get certain forms, come back before siesta, then go the the bank and
pay, then go to the PESCA office to finally get a license. At the last few tournaments including the Punta Chivato Bulls Only, we had a
representative there providing licenses on the spot. I have been able to get them ahead of time by getting the name to our local representative and
have been able to deliver them to Mulege, Santa Rosalia, San Lucas Cove, San Bruno, and Punta Chivato.

The fishing licenses are available 24/7 365 here in La Bocana, BCS (close to Punta Abreojos) with Geovane, fishing trip coordinator whose office is
next to the new beach restaurant.
Thanks for explaining why it is a good idea to buy here, I really had no idea about these changes.

Keeping the money local is a good idea. It is just like paying property taxes. If they are paid at the local municipal offices, the money stays in
the community. If they are paid online, the money does not trickle back.

I hear there is a place that is selling them in Mulege, if not let me know and when I am at Carnitas on Saturday morning, I can bring one down on
Saturday. They are available all the time in San Bruno. My number is 615-153-9082

Our local FONMAR chief here in La Ribera is Juan Diego Macklis. He sells licenses for Palmas bay fishermen (here in the mornings, Los Barriles in the
PM). I'll see if he has a list of FONMAR license sellers in the southland. He might have the list of phone numbers/harbors and if he does I'll post
them here.

Pescador, I typically buy my annual fishing license from a kiosk in the old Soriana shopping center at Colosio and Forjadores in La Paz. Will this
keep the money local?
Also, last year the girl assisting at that abovementioned kiosk where she entered all the info resulted in my being charged and additional $55 pesos
"processing fee"; is that a normal procedure to get charged a fee in those circumstances?

No, you should not get charged a fee. If you would like to buy one online go to
http://www.serialsepesca.com and on the first page is a link to licenses. If you would like also check the fotos section and you can see some of
the last tournaments and pictures that we put on.

I am not a fisherman so rarely pay attention to threads to do with fishing in Baja....however, I will be in Baja with friends this winter and they are
wanting to do "shore fishing"....and I told them that I thought they would need a fishing license.
What are the basic rules as my "cautionary advice" is being rejected?

ged....your "shore fishing" friends will not need licenses; only if fishing from a boat.....in mulege, lupe at la jungla was selling licenses before
the last dorado tourney but not sure if she is now...and one can still get a license at hugos computer repair in downtown mulege just off the square.

Michael, the computer license was from Ensenada site. Hopefully someone will talk to Hugos and help them set up the license connection at
