Rental RV's for a winter trip to Baja

BajaBuckeye - 6-24-2014 at 06:31 PM

I'm doing some research on a possible month long trip from San Diego to La Paz and all points in between around February or March,2015 using a small RV from an RV rental company called El Monte RV's. I've been lurking on this bajanomad site for a couple of years now but don't recall seeing any discussions about individuals renting RV's for their trips to Baja.Does anyone have any experience with renting an RV and driving it down south of the border? El Monte RV's does allow their rentals to travel to Baja so the idea definitely appeals to me.Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Remember that motorhomes are probably a bit wider than what you may be used to driving, take your time and be careful.

Most rentals that I've noticed were from El Monte RV, got a good look at one coming the other way in my lane once.

If the one you rent has a smashed mirror imbedded in it's side pull it out and save it for me:lol::lol:

Sorry to hear of your incident with that El Monte rental. That had to have been a scary thing to have happen. Thanks for the reminder about the narrow roads.Definitely something to be aware of.My wife and I both have a lot of years of boat towing experience and ,knock on wood, neither of us have had a ticket or an accident for over 30 years. We will also be renting the smallest RV possible since it will be just the two of us.

I'm sure that the price of the mandatory insurance they will make you purchase to cover their loss due to damage will be the same regardless of the RV size.

I have not rented a MH. I see the El Monte's on the road and they always look new. I am guessing it is expensive to rent one. I have had 4 older, low dollar MH's but have only done short low mileage trips because of fuel costs. I enjoy rv'ing as I know it.

I would hope they offer an "all damage insurance" coverage with it because it is easy to ding, scrape or bash a corner or roof.

also keep in mind El Monte will not permit you towing any thing behind the motorhome

Actually,I was told by an El Monte rep that you can ,in fact, tow something up to 3,000 lbs.The trailer I haul our kayaks and bikes with weighs under 600 lbs. so I would think that even their smallest RV would handle that light of a trailer. We're not doing the trip without the bikes and Kayaks!

Just motel it much cheaper and more fun to drive your own car, plus despite it being further south it can get cold in winter, I wore down jackets at the Bay Of Conception X-mas of '86 and glad we had them
