What I like most about Mexico

Cliffy - 6-30-2014 at 02:08 PM

I think for me, meeting the real people of Baja, the local Mexicans, is the most enjoyable part. They are, for the most part, some of the most friendly and enjoyable people I have ever met around the world.

shari - 6-30-2014 at 02:59 PM

I love the unexpected...you just never know what's going to happen from day to day...never a dull moment! Oh yeah....and the b-tchin weather and pristine beaches with nobody on them(around here anyway).

a few other things that turn my crank are...
the ranchero life...mulas n burros
the lovely fresh fruit
the beautiful well behaved children
the oh so descriptive spanish language
the family before work ethic
the sun
the clean air & water
the pace
the mexican sense of humour

Cliffy - 6-30-2014 at 06:01 PM

Ya topes! I could do without topes!! :-) :-) Especially the UNMARKED ones!

tripledigitken - 6-30-2014 at 06:41 PM

I like most, if you work at it, it's like stepping back in time 20-30 years.

BajaBlanca - 6-30-2014 at 09:16 PM

I agree with Shari, the language is pretty darn cool. And my parents named me Blanca, a Mexican name which is unheard of in Brazil, cause they liked it.

The music......solamente una vez is one of my favorites and a local Miguelenio wrote it! Turns out it was a priest writing about God. Well, that is what the tourguide said. And along with the music, the dancing!

The food, part of me in a past life was surely Mexican. Give me guacamole any day.

mmacdonald1026 - 6-30-2014 at 10:52 PM

I love that there are dogs everywhere where I live in Villa del Mar. For once, I don't have to make excuses for bringing my dog everywhere. Also, the beaches are dog friendly, as long as respectful of the people, no one seems to mind my 100 lb friendly American Bully running after his ball off lieash and what he thinks is "surfing" in the ocean, off leash of course. I am not going in. Its beautiful but looks too dangerouse to me at 49 years old. Not a gutsy kid anymore. Just wish the horses had a little more weight on them. Very sad. And some shade to wait for riders all day from the sun. Otherwise, I love living so close to a beach where my dog can be in his element rather than having to trek to a designated dog beach in the US. Although the rent is the only thing that I find cheaper than in the US, it is substantially so....

Here is what Les answered:

People food countryside ocean

The lack of traffic

Going to a garage and getting vehicles fixed right then and there

Same with doctor, visit and get seen right away

everything!

SFandH - 7-1-2014 at 09:37 AM

Beach Freedom!!

Pitching a tent on the beach.
Taking my dog to the beach.
Having a campfire on the beach.
Drinking a beer or two on the beach.
Parking my truck at the edge of the beach or even on the beach.

You know, all the stuff that is illegal in the US.

The local panaderias are also great places. yum, warm bread right out of the oven.

SlyOnce - 7-1-2014 at 10:11 AM

America is the "Land of the Free"

I am 100 x more free in Mexico.

cessna821 - 7-1-2014 at 10:16 AM

In Loma Azul it is a sheer joy to hear the local children playing football and enjoying themselves in the evening.

In Europe and USA this has stopped, and parents have to monitor their kids until they come back indoors.

BajaRat - 7-1-2014 at 10:33 AM

I guess its a good sign when I cant think of anything I don't like.
I like how the surroundings envelop you.

weebray - 7-1-2014 at 10:42 AM

We too love the unexpected aspect of life here. Yesterday afternoon we heard a loud band out on the street, we went to investigate, it was a "full on" gay pride parade complete with cross-dressing drum majors in high heels. What a hoot. If it weren't so damn difficult to post a picture here I'd download the video. Just gotta love it.

bajalearner - 7-1-2014 at 11:33 AM

This morning on my walk I thought about the US getting involved in another frigging war, or maybe just murdering people from drones. I then thought about Mexico living and letting live. The things I like about Mexico are pretty much the things I dislike about the US but inversely. Living here 3 years, I am still learning, adjusting and accepting many of the good things of Mexico.

Waddaya mean, "more free?" Free from what?

"Mexico is no place for an organized mind." That's a conclusion which I've come to. [bumper stickers and plate frames coming soon]

And the bad? What do you do about those? [or, are you even aware of them?]

Threads like this invariably morph into frenzies of US bashing. This one is getting there and I'll be the first to loudly repel from it.

OK, I'll bite...

More "free" from incessant Government intervention, the obsessive rat race mentality… and traffic lights! Maybe topes aren't so bad after all? :P

Traffic lights are your friend.
It's only a rat race if you get into it.
If you think "government intervention" isn't an issue in Mexico[we might call it ineptitude], then you've pretty well avoided that rat race and your issues are becoming self-healing.
Keep up the good work.

mcfez - 7-1-2014 at 02:20 PM

Down our way....the lack of rules and regulations. The people of the Baja are extraordinary friendly. Drive up to most any ranch and they will put you up for the night....after feeding you.

Where can you find that in Ca.....

Of course you do. Everyone strives for compliance with and from those they interact with. It's human nature........ it's survival of the species...... a cornerstone of natural selection. It's social lubricant. How would man survive and advance if everybody was a bump on a stump?

Did I?
Do you realize these threads are dependent and formed upon comparisons between US and Mexico? Without this dichotomy, the concept of 'worst....best" would be meaningless.
I didn't start this contest. Talk to Cliffy about it.

Cliffy - 7-1-2014 at 06:51 PM

It's interesting to see where my original postulation has taken everyone.
I made a personal observation about what I most like about a certain country. I made no inference as to or toward any other specific country. I have traveled the world and I have seen many countries.
I do think it is possible to make an evaluation (although any evaluation brings with it an inferred comparison but not a specific comparison) without a demeaning counter proposal. Such was my thought. Politics was not on my RADAR when it was made.

Ahhh...I know, Cliffy. I'm not saying your idea wasn't good from the heart. All I saw was an almost immediate, comparative deterioration of your premise. it happens all the time.
Anyway...thanks.

I still prefer the beer...Negra Modelo to be sure.

Cliffy - 7-1-2014 at 07:19 PM

Pacifico But that's another long story! :-)

No, I really don't. But I don't presume to speak for "everyone" or even anyone but me.

No one asked for an opinion from "everyone"....not even from you. It was one of them there rhetorical questions that don't require an answer...which you failed to give at any rate.

We'll try again later. In the meantime, try to remember that "No man is an island".......not even a small one. :light:

And I agree with Shari...well behaved kids, and family being at the center of their lives!

I guess you've never watched kids in a grocery store, let loose by their overly-permissive mothers. They can stir up the inventory faster than an earthquake.

BajaLuna - 7-2-2014 at 09:21 AM

Dennis, I'm sure there are ill-behaved kids, but from my experience the well behaved kids outnumber the ill-behaved children! Your experience may be different, such is life!

I mentioned overly-permissive mothers. If I were assigning fault, which I'm not, it would be on them.
It's just a different culture with different methods of operation.

That said...kids let loose to maraude a new environment don't get the classification of "well behaved" from me any sooner than would Atilla The Hun on a rampage.
