Well, you all were correct.... I tried to hang onto my FM-t going out of Mexico City, not a chance.
I had inquired last month as to whether you all thought that I could get a 6 month visa on arrival at MEX and then keep it for future road trips to
Baja. Your opinion, was it would not work.
Actually, when I handed my passport and visa to the agent at the United checkin she grabbed the visa and it was all over.
Apparently they now separate you from the visa right at the airlines checkin, and when you go through the Migra exit they just scan the passport and
stamp it.
I tried to ask her if she could let me keep it, she looked at me like I had asked to carry out one of the shrines from the Basilica.
Oh well, it clearly said I was there by air and was only visiting the central part of the country, so it would probably not work in Baja anyway.
Case closed, onward and upward (and $20 at the border next time down)

20yrs. as a Travel Agent just couldn't convince anyone to the reality of flying v driving, and it still amazes me that anyone that has done it still
doesn't understand the difference. When you fly into Mexico, you will not get back into the US without your FM-T (not be loaded onto the plane into
Mexico) coming across the border from Baja, just where are you supposed to surrender it?
At least they simplified the process, now it is on your ticket (the fee) with the airline. you might be able to argue that. Shheeze!

one more thing, posted in very large printed letters behind the migra officer who signed us into MEX.... the sign said, "If you lose your entry visa a
fine of $42 will be collected before you can depart!"

The $42 fine is 'good news', in the 'olden days' you wouldn't be fined, you would be denided boarding......
What amazes me in post 9/11 is that it's a fine and not the hard core no way you are getting out of Mexico without
the FMT (or into the US), just didn't happen......

At mex-City airport you are getting the FM-T for free.
As soon as they can catch you > on the road on an outpost or anywhere else, they take the free FM-t away and issue a new one > please pay 210 Pesos at

If you fly with Captn. Mike you get to keep the Visa. However, if you try to use it driving south you will be asked to buy a new one. I just told
them I was going to be less than 6 days, and was on my way. I got the full 6 months of use out of it using this technique.

also, in the old days they used to make you buy, with pesos, a departure tax coupon.
now it is included in your ticket and you don't even realize it.
that, plus the visa included, makes the whole thing seamless.
