MISSING PERSON: Please Help Us Find Mike!

 Pages:  1

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 12:02 PM

We're turning to social media to try and find my best friend who is missing. Mike Miller lives in Leucadia, CA, but has left with nothing but his navy blue Ford F150 truck with a Northstar pop-up camper on top. He left his phone and medication at his house, along with everything else. He may be going to Mexico, but we really don't know.
We would go to Baja all the time, stopping in Ensenada at the Villa Marina Hotel, Don Eddie's and the Old Mill. He'd ride his dirt bike all around that area..Santa Tomas to Colonet on the beach, etc.
We are desperate to find him. He'd just finished a regimen of Prednisone, which can cause depression and confusion.
Please help by spreading the word to anyone who may be able to help. We love him, and want him home..navy blue Ford F150 truck with a Northstar pop-up camper on top.

bajabuddha - 8-4-2014 at 12:11 PM

Calmate. Can you give a little more info; how old is he? Hair, eyes, how tall, aprox. weight, etc? Contact # in case someone does see or talk to him, and then what do you intend to do? Nomads will respond, many in the Ensenada area.
Also, if he comes home, please post it here so the thread can be put to rest.

Good luck, I hope you find him.

pappy - 8-4-2014 at 12:20 PM

also, what is everything else? id? passport? wallet?

DianaT - 8-4-2014 at 12:29 PM

And in addition, photos of Mike and if possible, his truck would help. If you have photos to post and have trouble posting them here, one of us can help you post them.

I hope he is back home right away.

BTW-- once you gather all the information, if you are signed up with facebook, be sure to put all the information on the TalkBaja Facebook Page

[Edited on 8-4-2014 by DianaT]

BajaGringo - 8-4-2014 at 12:37 PM

Photos of Mike and his pickup would be a HUGE help. Until you can post them, is his pickup a single cab, extended or quad cab? Factory rims, chrome, black, etc? Any driving lights or additional equipment installed on the truck???

Without a more detailed image of Mike and his truck it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

If you don't know how to post photos you can email them to me via the email link below this box and I will post them here and on our facebook page.

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 12:42 PM

thank you for all your comments~

Mike is 5'8" tall, 145lbs. soaking wet. He has a big tattoo of a dragon on his right upper arm. Salt and pepper hair.
He took his wallet, but not sure about his passport. He didn't take his cell phone or asthma medication. He left his surfboards and dirt bike home, too.
My gut says he'd go out to the beach, north of Colonet, where he rode a lot with his friends, and where we'd camp sometimes..but could be in Ensenada at the Villa Marina Hotel (the tall one).
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help..thank you from my heart.

Age?

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 01:21 PM

I just emailed pictures to one of you wonderful people..

Mike is 58 yrs.old, and is in great shape, working out every day.

DENNIS - 8-4-2014 at 01:31 PM

When did he supposedly disappear?

SFandH - 8-4-2014 at 01:32 PM

He left his phone and medication at his house, along with everything else.

Doesn't sound like he was planning on going very far. Have you called the police to see if he's been involved in a traffic accident or has had a medical emergency of some type?

How long has he been missing?

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 01:33 PM

Please give me any suggestions you may have.other forums, etc?
You are all making me feel like this may help..

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 01:43 PM

I don't think he was planning on going very far either. But he loves Baja, and I think he may be down there.
I'm living near Vail, CO now, so I can't run down there myself. His two best buddies were going down as far as Ensenada today, but you all can be so much help, and thank you for caring.

BooJumMan - 8-4-2014 at 01:52 PM

DENNIS - 8-4-2014 at 01:53 PM

How long has he been "missing?"

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 01:57 PM

He was last heard from on Saturday afternoon..

Where was he Saturday afternoon?

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 03:05 PM

He was at his house in Leucadia, CA..north county San Diego.
He left his two motorcyles with the signed titles on the seats, signed over to his two friends. The house was open, and his cell phone was on the counter..not good.

BajaNomad - 8-4-2014 at 03:13 PM

Or, just post the pic(s) to the Facebook site like you did, and someone can repost it here as well, like this:

(oooh... FB's gettin' tricky with permissions now, wow)

Attaching the image here instead:

I just posted the photo of Mike to Talk Baja on Facebook.

woody with a view - 8-4-2014 at 03:41 PM

why does anyone think he's gone to Baja? why leave your boards? maybe he went to the desert in Borrego to do some soul searching?!?!?!?!

They've stated they don't know where he went - the thought of him having gone to Baja is just a hunch/speculation.... but is apparently because he has more of a connection to the San Quintin area than to, say Borrego (etc).

DENNIS - 8-4-2014 at 04:37 PM

Was he the type to get legal in Mexico with a tourist permit?
Was it established he did or didn't take his passport with him?

DENNIS - 8-4-2014 at 04:40 PM

This is the medication, Prednisone, that was mentioned in the first post:

stiladam - 8-4-2014 at 04:48 PM

Worried about this guy...I grew up in Encinitas and he looks familiar. Probably seen him in the lineup over the years.

A photo without the sunglasses would be great. The eyes are what you remember.

Best of luck and hugs to the family

My Daughter works at Hotel Jardines in the office, & my other daughter works at Los Olivos campground both here in San Quintin. They both said they have not seen the truck.
A friend of mine who is on Baja Nomads, said she drove by the Old Mill and Don Eddie's earlier and did not see his truck.

luv2fish - 8-4-2014 at 06:05 PM

Is he ex military ? Does he travel with weapons in the vehicle ? Might want to check with Mexican Customs as well. Hoping all is well.

BajaGringo - 8-4-2014 at 09:08 PM

I spread the word around town here in San Quintin and just received a message that Mike was seen this afternoon stopping for groceries at a small store on the highway here in San Quintin. The owner of the store said that when he left he headed south...

I'm so hopeful, now that he was seen buying groceries! We need to contact El Rosario..anyone have contacts there?
You people are the best, my gratitude can't be expressed in words..

Yes, I pasted Mikes photos to a message I sent to all my friends here. One of them answered back that just a short while before Mike was in his store and had just left, heading south. He could be heading out to Jardines, EL Molino or continue south to EL Rosario. I am contacting again my friends at Jardines and El Molino with the update on the latest sighting...

bajabuddha - 8-4-2014 at 09:32 PM

BG, is it possible to maybe do a run down to El Pabellon or a few other beach camps in the a.m. fairly early, see if he crashed there for the night?

BajaGringo - 8-4-2014 at 09:34 PM

Yes, I will head out early to Jardines, El Molino, Cielito Lindo and then campgrounds south...

bajabuddha - 8-4-2014 at 09:39 PM

Gracias, amigo.

Mean-time, Vailgrl, CALMA - TE. Be calm, gal... get a good night's sleep; easy to say, I know. Your back is covered for the moment. Lots of rumors abound in Baja; the peninsula was built on them. Tomorrow we'll find out more for you, but for now, take care of yourself. k? Be well.

vailgrl - 8-4-2014 at 10:07 PM

I'm going to try to sleep now..at least we know he was ok this afternoon. What wonderful news that was! Thank you doesn't come close to what I feel for all of you..
I'll be at home in the morning: 970-370-7056 if you hear or see anything..

BajaBlanca - 8-5-2014 at 05:54 AM

BajaGringo. Great job! Everyone moved fast and that is the key right there.

bajabuddha - 8-5-2014 at 06:21 AM

Good Morning, VAILGRL ! Here's hoping today brings news. Please be patient, gonna take some time; also, just a tidbit to steel you a little; if he's not located in San Quintin today, there is NO INTERNET between there and Guerrero Negro to speak of, and that's over 200 miles, most of it pretty remote if you're not familiar with that neck of the woods. Nomads are a good networking group (mostly), and won't let up, even when they're supposed to.... (j/k)

Hope for the best, plan for the worst, and the best to you and yours. One Q~ what do you want to happen if he IS located?

Ateo - 8-5-2014 at 06:45 AM

Yes, if he's located by someone, how should he be approached?

DENNIS - 8-5-2014 at 07:07 AM

In Baja? Cold Pacifico in hand, of course.

vailgrl - 8-5-2014 at 07:19 AM

Yes, please approach him. He's left everything behind at home. Tell him how much we all love him, and want him back. Tell him that Ed and Harry went down to Baja looking for him, and that there are so many people who care, especially me.
If he refuses to come back, ask if he's made arrangements for his house and belongings..maybe with his attorney?? If he's serious, let him know what this will mean to us, his best friends. We'll be the ones left with dealing with all of this. We need to know what he wants done with everything. Maybe we can get him back this way.
We can't force him to do anything. He'll tell you he's moving to Peru, or some other story, but it's not true. He's going down there for one reason, to disappear forever.
Ask him to at least contact me. We were together for nine years, and maybe I can turn things around.

What leads you to believe this so strongly? His instabilities should be known by anyone in contact with him.

....''there's some people that care about you''.....might not be a bad way to start...

....but what if he's a 'tecate & lime' sorta guy!??.....maybe carry a small cooler,,or maybe the fellow in the store remembers his brand.

...sorry for my previous comment,,,a couple of replies came in while I was typing,,,
.......Indeed there's a lot pointing in the direction that vailgrl's thinking,,,but there IS hope too---buying groceries gives a huge grain of hope.....it makes me think there's a REAL possibility that he gave himself a night at least to look at stars,,,get some perspective---that's hopefully all that's needed for BG or someone to arrive with the cerveza!.......here's 'hoping'

micah202 - 8-5-2014 at 08:33 AM

.
...I guess things have gone to direct communications now,,,but let us know when there's some resolution!

BajaGringo - 8-5-2014 at 08:44 AM

Took off this morning at 4:30 and went first out to El Molino. I talked with many of the fishing charters I know and most of them told me they had seen my post about Mike on facebook but hadn't seen him or his truck. Kept asking around and talked to a couple of guys who thought they might have seen his truck yesterday afternoon but no positive ID's.

From there went to Jardines and the night watchman told me that he had been there since 10PM the night before and hadn't seen Mike's truck. From there I drove by Los Olivos campground and no sign of Mike. Continued on out to Cielito Lindo and no sign of him there either. Drove out to the beach on the southern end of the bay all around to see if he might have camped out there but nothing. Drove down to El Pabellon RV camp as well as out to the beach there and nothing. I did get to talk to a lot of people and left Mike's description as well as his truck and they all told me they would check on facebook to see the photos.

I called LeeAnn and gave her a summary of the morning trip and she then mentioned to me that she believes that Mike is probably headed down to a surf spot on the BCS Pacific side, north of San Juanico/Scorpion Bay called "The Wall". She also mentioned that if he is heading there he would probably stop in San Ignacio.

Shari - could you share this info on Mike with your contacts in San Ignacio, please???

Edit - Can somebody who is good at this make a flyer???

[Edited on 8-5-2014 by BajaGringo]

SFandH - 8-5-2014 at 08:51 AM

The Wall is north of Guerrero Negro. It's one of the southern seven sisters points if I remember correctly, it's been a long time since I've been there, but I think I'm right.

You turn west near a really small town named Rosarito.

So it is in BC, not BCS???

vailgrl - 8-5-2014 at 09:02 AM

We, his friends, know in our hearts what he intends to do in Baja.
Since Mr. Hoff didn't find him this morning, I'm thinking the next stop will be San Ignacio. He'll most likely stop there before taking the North Road to Scorpion Bay. He's probably going to a desolate spot north of Scorp..
I'll send pictures of this spot (we call it Domingos) as soon as I can. It's a couple of hours north of of Scorp, and then a barely-noticeable "road" to the ocean. It sits on top of a cliff, overlooking an estuary and sand dunes. I'll try to get a better location from some of Mike's friends who went there with him.
Again, I can't thank all of you enough..ever.

vailgrl - 8-5-2014 at 09:07 AM

I don't think he's headed to the Wall..but can't say for sure.
Domingo's in in BCS, a couple of hours north of Scorpion Bay. It's desolate and one of Mike's favorite spots on earth.
I've alerted my friends, Glen and Roberta Horn, who live at the Wall half the year, and they're reaching out to folks who may be there now.
So I'm looking for folks in San Ignacio to keep an eye out for him. From there he'll most likely take the North Road down and turn off to Domingo's.
Is that more clear? I'll post pics that I have of the area when I find them..

I just posted Mike's info on several facebook pages, in and around the San Ignacio area. Hopefully we'll hear something...

mojo_norte - 8-5-2014 at 10:41 AM

what about notifying the Army checkpoints (if anyone happens to be near one). Some of them are writing down vehicle info and license numbers.

We're trying to get hold of a person in Scorpion Bay, Jaime, who has lived there for many, many years. He's the person that introduced Mike to Domingo's. I think a friend has his phone number or contact info. If we can get him to see Mike and talk to him, this could be our best bet to save him.
I'll keep you all informed..

I think that's just northwest of san juanico, about 15 km as the crow flies

shari - 8-5-2014 at 12:41 PM

I just got back in now and saw this and called Gary & Terry at Ignacio Springs...they are out of the country but I explained it all to the woman there and called Juanita at Casa Leree as well and asked them to take a drive around this evening to see if he is camping in San Ignacio.

But it would be nice to know if seen if he should be approached or what to say to him. If it were me, I would strike up a friendly conversation and ask the usual touristy questions...hot enough for ya...nice rig bro, where are you from, where are you headed, are you on vacation, what do you do etc.

Of course we will all be watching out for him in our village and I have also pasted it to my facebook page.

I think you are right mtgoat666...here are a couple shots from Google Earth. When I zoomed way in, the rocks down by the water and sand beach in the background looked very much like the background in the second photo above.

....wow,,,was just sending a U2U,,and found this.....I had totally forgotten about it,,but it's a very similar situation not so long ago, with positive outcome! ...I share it in hope and prayer......

----------------------------

.....''I'm glad your brother's safe!!..as much as he left a suicide note,,,the purchase of a bunch of camp-gear was something of a 'clue' that the 'jury was out' for the dear fellow........I'm glad they came back with a life sentence!:D:rolleyes:
...nothing like the sacred manuscript of Baja's wilderness to help perspective when one get's troubled .....I know for me my visit's to Baja have helped me stay on the planet...it's not that I've ever felt particularly suicidal,,,but visits to Baja probably have saved my life,,as much as some adventures have taken me to the edge!
...life on the edge of existence makes mundane everyday life -much- more bearable!...I hope our friend can use our beautiful baja as pro-active medicine in the future,,,,and perhaps come join this site for that 'vicarious' connection that helps between visits''

I've emailed Jaime, and pray that he can help us. He showed Mike Domingo's many years ago...

VG Do you know the surfer who manages the B&B in San Juanico for his parents? He might be a good person to contact as well:

We are in La Bocana which is close to Punta Abreojos, another surfing spot, so I will contact folks there for them to keep an eye out too.

vailgrl - 8-6-2014 at 10:28 AM

I had an email back from Jaime just now, great news, if Mike's headed his way:
LeeAnn, I have given instrctions to the game wardens to report in on any vehicles camped at Domingo. They have a big boat parked out there 24/7 with a full crew. They keep track of all traffic. That's all they do. So we should know if Mike shows or is there today.
If his truck is reported we will go out and try to talk to him.
There is a lot of Baja between here and San Quintin but luckily we have the boat on duty 24/7
Baja can cure a lot of problems. Let's hope that's what he came down here to do

Tom is not managing it at the moment. His Mom is and her name is Kristin. Good luck! :)

I wish to God I could...

EnsenadaDr - 8-7-2014 at 02:54 AM

I assume he has been reported missing to the local authorities. Leaving his medication behind is not a good sign. Prednisone is not a medication you can suddenly stop taking, you can go into severe adrenal insufficiency. Could be a long term COPD problem or something more serious. Was he ill that you know of? I would not continue to hope he went south of the border especially without his meds. Yes it's heartbreaking for you but concentrate North of the Border please. Leucadia is a lovely area, too bad no one knew if he was suffering from depression or not. I did also note on your Facebook page you are posting he was found alive. We all know that sightings can be sketchy at best until we can confirm them. How often do you see Mike? It appears you are living in Colorado? When was the last time you saw him?

Thank you for your comments, EnsenadaDr, but I'll continue to search both north and south of the border.
And I will continue to hope..

EnsenadaDr - 8-7-2014 at 08:29 AM

I did not say to not hope, but to give a sighting of Mike by a grocery store employee with no confirmation as a definitive sign that he is alive might be a bit premature. Perhaps a trip down south of the border yourself where you yourself know the special spots you and Mike spent time together would be more productive. I did notice the Facebook photos you put up on your site with Mike and you enjoying Baja together and it is certainly heart wrenching for everyone, and especially a spouse or girlfriend. BajaNomad has many connections and avenues for contacts but there is nothing like the family themselves going and looking personally for their loved ones. Good luck and I certainly wish you peace and resolve in your journey to find Mike.

We are all looking out for him!

SFandH - 8-7-2014 at 09:10 AM

Vailgrl,

It may comfort you to know that he can buy prednisone in Mexico at any pharmacy without an Rx. It's cheap. No doubt a doctor prescribed it and it's been my experience that they carefully explain the ins and outs of the medication when the prescription is made. I've taken it off and on, injections and pills, for over 40 years and have had no problems.

vailgrl - 8-7-2014 at 09:31 AM

Thank you, SFandH..
He had completed the Prednisone. The medication he left behind was his asthma inhaler and pills, both of which can be purchased in Mexico, I know.
Thank you for your words..
