A Drive Down a Dirt Road........................

Ateo - 8-16-2014 at 04:54 PM

We headed South for fun and games and even some surf. We made a couple new friends, camped alone for 5 days, ate fresh seafood, and did a few hikes.

On the way down after filling up at Baja Cactus in El R, we discovered my 5 gallon gas can had a hole in the top. No way was I gonna drive down a bumpy road spilling gas everywhere (see my Abreojos report last year). I thought about leaving the can for someone to use the 5 gallons inside, but headed to the mercado at the Left Turn and found another can that we used as a gas can.

We were off.

Cracked a Tecate and blasted some music:

Hike:

We hired a Panga. Freddy and Omar were awesome.

They gave us a lobster after we tipped them a 12 pack of Coca Cola.

BLT

On the way in we stopped and got talking to a great woman who makes Escabeche. We ordered 3 jars, 2 for a fellow Nomad, and 1 for us. This stuff is insane. On the way out, we picked it up and was asked to come in for breakfast.

We headed out, always with the goal of making it to Highway 1 safely and without a breakdown. Once there, the next goal is the border. We stopped for a night at the Garden in San Q.

the next morning an object came flying off of a passing 18 wheel and did this to my windshield. Scared the crap outta me when it happened cuz it sounded like a gun shot. Maybe it was a meteorite?

And on the way home I always wonder what we missed going on in the "real world". Robin Williams RIP, you made us laugh.

And I leave you with a beautiful view:

Thanks Woody.

Yeah, it was one of the biggest I've seen. Meaty too. I tossed him into the bushes.

Wowzers. Stomach dropped a little seeing this but stoked. It's no secret obviously. Grew up going there with my dad since I was very young! Its very special.

There is a shrine we built for a friend who took his life up on the hill behind the point about 15 years ago. Its a good 30 min hike but shows all the beauty of the point.

This winter I was there and all the low areas were full of water. Apparently its dried up?

Also that is a giant desert hairy scorpion! I have one in a terrarium sitting right next to me. They are very cool! Sting is like a bee.

Ateo,
PERFECTO! Excellent photo essay, esse.
Pic 1 looked familiar.
Pic 3 I was thinking, "I think I know that place"
Pic 5 looked familiar too
Pic 9 cinched it. There is no mistaking that old wreck and the coastline behind it.
Oh, and that last pic, no mistaking that view. That one is etched in the permanent memory banks also.
Truly a magical place.
Nicely done.

Nice report. Mine to follow soon. I know I should have stopped to say "Hi" as we passed your camp, but we were on a mission to get to "our" spot and set up before sundown, and I was not sure if it really was you, or not.

If you see a Toyota truck in Baja, off road, good chance it's a Nomad! :light:

No worries Taco de Baja! I had forgotten the make of your vehicle, but did see the kayak on top. We waved as you drove by! Next time!
