Hurricane Marie Storm Photos...new video added

shari - 8-27-2014 at 10:17 AM

Things are starting to settle down here today in Bahia Asuncion as Hurricane Marie heads west. The maximum swell appeared to be around 20' yesterday and this morning it is still about 15' on the big sets. It was the biggest swell the locals had seen in over 20 years and a good test of what a swell like that can do.

Luckily there was no rain involved or it would have been a disaster as there was water backed up to the streets and breakwaters people had built. Here are a few photos of the event.

It did erode some of the sand bank in town away and where there were no sea but as far as I know there were no losses.

there were pangas parked everywhere

People were vigilent nearing high tide...at the house most at risk, the woman sprinkled holy water in front of it...seemed to have worked!

Mandela was a bit concerned about the rising tide

the pier took a beating but is still there!

it was wild between the island and the point

our windows here at La Bufadora Inn got kinda salty

the low lying areas were flooded...good thing this guy built on stilts

the palm stabilized the bank and are still there...next storm all bets are off.

the new lagoon goes right up to the highway

the coast road to La Bocana

if there had been rain it would have been flooded big time!

Wow. Wonderful photos, Shari.

Ateo - 8-27-2014 at 10:22 AM

Gnarly!

shari - 8-27-2014 at 10:25 AM

it's funny because today the waves are still gigantic but I am barely looking out at it now as it is less dramatic than yesterday. We lost ALL the sand at our beach beside our house...bare rock there now...dang it. Hotter than stink here today...at least 90 with hardly a breeze and full on sun...yuck.

Barbareno - 8-27-2014 at 10:29 AM

The pictures are out of this world fantastic. Worth the wait.

Where we going to go chunky dunking on New years day? That is a sad loss.

bajabuddha - 8-27-2014 at 10:36 AM

Spectacular shots, Shari. That is some kind of power out there! Your beaches will be back before you know it; stock up on bug spray though. All those puddles will be breeding grounds very soon.

Good thing the storm was 500 miles out to sea! Thank heavens it didn't follow another path....

Cliffy - 8-27-2014 at 10:37 AM

Can any locals remember the sand disappearing before this?
I think the sand will come back in time as normal sea patterns return and transport it there.
Nice pics

Bob53 - 8-27-2014 at 10:37 AM

Thanks for sharing, shari! Great shots!

LancairDriver - 8-27-2014 at 10:39 AM

Great photos Sheri! Looks like the waves of typical Oregon winter storms that will be here soon.

shari - 8-27-2014 at 10:41 AM

glad you like the photos everyone...the town beach has more sand...everything has changed. It is our little beach beside our house on the rocky cliff that has lost it's sand.

Russ - 8-27-2014 at 10:52 AM

Thanks Shari

bajacalifornian - 8-27-2014 at 11:08 AM

Wow! Thanks for sharing.

Mexitron - 8-27-2014 at 11:11 AM

Thanks Shari---great pics! Love the one of the horse watching the water come over the road. The new lagoon is wild.

Mexitron - 8-27-2014 at 11:13 AM

The channel between the point and the island looks crazy---waves breaking sideways...wow.

willardguy - 8-27-2014 at 11:15 AM

think that horse was gettin a little nervous? great shots!

micah202 - 8-27-2014 at 11:16 AM

...excellent Shari...for what I can see,, unfortunately only 4 pictures, with others showing 'sorry',,loading very slow
.....and link to slideshow says....''Sorry, the requested page does not exist.''

...any chance to re-post the link to your photosite?

Paulina - 8-27-2014 at 11:25 AM

I love the horse stabled on the porch. Wish I could talk Dern into letting me do that with Handy.

Jk, I'd think the fly issue would put a damper on me wanting to have him so close by, Mr. Ed style.

Thanks for posting the pics.

Maybe he's waiting while his buddy is drinking coffee. My guess.

BajaBlanca - 8-27-2014 at 11:55 AM

So happy that more damage was averted. la bocana shoreline must somehow be more protected? We had tons of waves and some got big, but mostly what surprised was the number of waves. They came in series that never ended but NOTHING at all like Asuncion!

Our beaches are wet but intact.

Amazing shots and again, so happy that it was not worse.

Bajaboy - 8-27-2014 at 12:03 PM

Look forward to exploring the nearby beaches in a few weeks. Each visit brings different discoveries. Thanks for sharing.

durrelllrobert - 8-27-2014 at 12:15 PM

Nothing like that in Canada eh Shari?

shari - 8-27-2014 at 12:45 PM

hmmm....try this again

Paulina...the shack is just a storage shed for lobster traps and fishing nets...the horse seems to like it there but misses Barbarena's treats and visits.

the new lagoon is crazy big

shari - 8-28-2014 at 06:14 AM

woody was here in spirit...and t-shirt

Feathers - 8-28-2014 at 07:04 AM

Just WOW! Fabulous photos, Shari!!!

watizname - 8-28-2014 at 08:00 AM

Great photos, and video Shari. Thanks.
Its funny that the blowhole which is usually spectacular looked a pretty weak, like a little spurt, compared to the rageing white water coming over the rocks. I got a kick out of that. Relativity in action.

too big to surf..... I'm at work instead. BTW, my son surf OB Jetty yesterday with 50 others. glad I was working to save money for other less known spots in late October!

MMc - 8-28-2014 at 10:46 AM

Yesterday was fun, a paddle fest for sure. This swell is being being over hyped by the So. Cal. news for sure. going south tomorrow for the dawn patrol.
Shari's photo's are impressive. I have friends that went south for this swell, the story should be good.

motoged - 8-28-2014 at 11:23 AM

Shari,
Thanks for the show.....primo, skookum, and all that !!! :saint:

woody with a view - 8-28-2014 at 12:19 PM

I'm hoping she pushed up some tuna and dorado!!!

shari - 8-28-2014 at 03:18 PM

I think the fish are gonna be some hungry after this. No boats in the water yet as there is still a massive swell and the beaches are piled over a meter high with seaweed in some spots like ensenadita by our place...eww...gonna stink for sure.

The town beach is now a beautiful shiny black...crazy!

The Governors Cup fishing tournament is next weekend too.

chuckie - 8-28-2014 at 03:21 PM
