Take a Dog Into Tijuana

We're coming to San Diego Friday to pick up my sister-in-law at the bus central. We are getting rooms at the Motel 6 in San Ysidro at it's pet friendly.

My question is - do we need to get one of those international certificates to take our Chihuahua into Mexico and then bring her right back out again? Would her shot record be enough?

Here's what gov agencies say, FWIW.

"CDC does not require a health certificate for dogs to be imported into the United States, although some airlines or states may require them. However, dogs must be healthy upon arrival and be vaccinated against rabies. Dogs may be denied entry if they look like they are sick with a communicable disease or if proof of a valid rabies vaccination is not provided. If a dog appears to be sick at the port of entry, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the dog owner's expense might be required."

It's been my experience that most hotels don't allow unattended animals left in the rooms.

Over the past 8 years, we have been bringing our Yorkie, into and out of Baja and mainland Mexico. On once have are papers been looked at. Just make sure the shots are up to date, specifically the rabies.

A one night trip to TJ? I would leave my dog home. Makes no sense to drag a dog around during urban travel. Most dogs get stressed traveling in crowds and street noise.

Dogs can stay home for a day or three. They are dogs.

Get a dog sitter.

Doggie Daycare

Of course, traveling with one's beloved pet can be a delight, but there are times when it's in Fido's best interest to leave her behind. Going into the bustle of daytime Tijuana might be one of those times to consider a doggie daycare.

Do some research in advance and call veterinarians in the San Ysidro area for references of a qualified sitter. Petsmart may be a good source also, either for referral to an individual sitter or for info about their stores offering onsite group daycare. A reputable provider will require proof of current vaccines including bordatella/kennel cough.

some dogs are special.... Mine is !! and loves to turn a crowd on !! any where,,any time....the thought of leaving her behind is NOT a concept,thought or possible...But I understand that you don't...its all good !!!

Where are you planning on going in TJ? Some places are dog friendly like walking on the malecon in Playas. Some are not.

We're picking someone up at the bus central and taking her to the border station to get her entry paper renewed.

We will cross directrly back into San Ysidro.

I have been taking my dog into TJ for years and never once have I been asked for anything from anyone.

.....mann,,my doggie would have been thrilled ,in retrospect, to have stayed in a kennel for even -weeks- rather than experience the wilds of baja

.....Ed was 'king of th'hill'' ,,easily landing into and 'sorting' 10 dogs back home,,,but totally out of depth in baja,,,,wether it be the games coyotes played,,,those amazing 'free-piles' of fish guts :barf:

...or the town cats that barely flintch when a dog chases-up--I'mean -really- what's a self respecting dog meant to do if he actually 'catches' a cat!

Well, you'll be with your dog when she poops in the car from the three-hour wait, at least... ;-)

I see dogs in the line all the time. Bear in mind that if you do go out and about, there's mongrel curs wandering EVERYWHERE. It's not as bad as in rural mainland Mexico but there's a LOT of stray dogs a lot bigger than your Chihuahua.

If you do cross her, though, get her a Xolos sweater.

All true. If you do decide to take your dog, take some of those doggy pee pads with you for your border wait, because you're going to need them.

Well, we just got back and our main problem was finding the bus terminal my sister-in-law was coming in to.

We had no idea that, in additional to the central, several other companies had their own terminals.

As it turned out, we managed to find the one for Guasave and it was quite clean and neat. Has a small restaurant where my wife and I ate - holding our puppy - and the food was quite good. Some kind of green pepper dish with creamy sauce and chicken. Even the frijoles were quite good.

Did not the restrooms now cost 5 pesos to use but was quite modern and clean.

As for our puppy, I held her on my lap and handed her shot record over with my passport. Not a single question and, after checking the computer, passed us through.
