Bob and Susan - 9-18-2014 at 05:34 PM

9am sept18 we saw this at san Ignacio...a big puddle in the road north of town

first bus that tried to get thru failed

10 buses with tourists from cabo were waiting...slept there all night...very upset

we turned around and drove home
2 more days I think till safe and clear

the road has some damage between santa rosalia and mulege but has rough by-passes...

I drove thru with the versa easily and those things are low

I wanted to share the latest report on Highway 1 road conditions that were passed on to us from official sources...

Highway 1 Road conditions LATEST UPDATE

In spite of the travel warnings many of you are going to make the drive down Highway 1 regardless, so if you must go, please keep a few things in mind...

Based on some of the latest information available, traffic is currently flowing in both directions without too much trouble to Guerrero Negro. There is still some water at the vado in Cataviņa but it is not enough to cause problems as long as you exercise extreme precaution and drive slowly. Gasoline is available in El Rosario and with some limited availability in Guerrero Negro. Supplies of fuel there are in great regional demand and expect possible long lines. Delays of as much as several hours are typical, waiting for additional fuel to arrive by truck.

Past Guerrero Negro the road is "open" but with a lot of limitations and potential problems.

The government has made the road "passable" at several spots around the Guerrero Negro area with some quick regrading work. The road is currently drivable but very rough at times. Make sure your tires are in good shape with a lot of tread and a good spare.

The availability of gasoline south of Guerrero Negro is quite limited with no guarantee you will be able to fill your tank. Where you find a station selling gasoline, expect long lines. Gasoline in BCS is currently being rationed with priority given to emergency aid and disaster response. A truck pulling in to fill the tanks at a gasoline station where you are waiting may be called off to go deliver somewhere else, without warning.

The mid section of the peninsula also suffered a lot of flood damage in locations and some communities may not currently be equipped to handle services such as food, gas and lodging as normal.

The further south you go, expect more potential problems with road conditions, gasoline availability and communications. There still is very limited information for many areas, especially once you leave Highway 1.

Due to the current breakdown in communications, any accident or road emergency response will be extremely slow or even none.

If you are going to make the drive, be sure to keep your tank full, check your tires, all fluids and make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition for the trip.

Pack lots of extra water, snacks and extra medications you may be taking.

Best to wait but if you must travel right now, be careful, take extreme precaution and drive safely.

shari - 9-18-2014 at 09:29 PM

Thanks so much Ron.We are at Baja Cactus and was just told at the gas station that GN is out of gas now...we hope to fuel up in Jesus Maria..should be a very interesting day tomorrow!

Bob, is that photo of San Ignacio on the highway? We talked to a guy who tried to get to Abreojos today and said the arroyo is still uncrossable.

RedBear - 9-18-2014 at 09:50 PM

Shari, did you get any other info about the road into abreojos or how far that guy got?My husband is planning to travel south next week and looking for road conditions. We also can't get through via cell yet & no landlines working.

shari - 9-18-2014 at 10:05 PM

he just said he had to turn back...I dont think he got far. Should be fine by next week though.

RedBear - 9-18-2014 at 10:19 PM

Ok thx. I also sent a post to Blanca in case she's heard more from anyone in abre. O
I'll be traveling south in October by bus so hopefully the roads will be in good shape by then.

Bob and Susan - 9-19-2014 at 05:50 AM

Where was this picture taken?

Looks like someplace flat...Maybe the area between Guerrero Negro and Vizcaino?

PabloLJ - 9-19-2014 at 08:53 AM

I was told that the road was washed out and impassable (for now) around Campo Fisher on the road into Abreojos. They never lost electricity, just got their internet back up last night around 9:30PM and still no cellular as of this writing. I had a travel plan to leave San Diego on 9/20, pushing out until 9/27. Friend was going to attempt it yesterday and post updates, haven't heard a word from him yet, so...

Great report, any news on the road into town and the Mission? Mi amigo Oscar and family live just up the street....and I really wonder about the river crossing and bottom land...

ElCap - 9-19-2014 at 09:50 AM

Lots of photos and info here (in spanish) of Vizcaino and GN area
http://www.vizcainohoy.com/index.php/guerrero-negro-noticias...

chuckie - 9-19-2014 at 10:12 AM

Also says 1st Para, Fiber optic link severed, affecting comm to Baja Sur...

Archie - 9-19-2014 at 11:10 AM

Drove last night from Ensenada to GN, no problems at all, just a quick fix in the vado up north of Cataviņa, pay attention to cattle grazing along the road.

Laguna Chapala has some water, and lotsa puddles all over the place, be carefull if you pull over to the side, saw a semi stuck, soil its saturated.

Gas available in Jesus Maria, in GN saw a line of cars waiting in the Caracoles pemex, went today and they are serving ony 20 liters at a time.

If youre planning to come further than GN, bring cash. Theres no bank or ATM or telegrafos as midday of today 09-19-2014

shari - 9-19-2014 at 11:49 AM

woooo hoooo....i just got into Vizcaino and my guardian angels were looking after me and a Nomad buddy pulled in so I have a ride home and will sleep in my own bed tonight with no traffic noises...grateful does not begin to describe how I feel...thanks boys!!!!

Catavina is a piece of cake....the road crews and ESSA trucks are filling in the horrific highway mess between GN & Vizcaino...we waited a half hour to get through. Still no phone, cell or internet in Asuncion so this will be my last post for maybe quite awhile.

Bob and Susan - 9-19-2014 at 04:15 PM

anyone have a first hand report on the "puddle" at san Ignacio

I haven't seen ANY cars from the north yet...just the BIG semis

we now, finally have communications. but the road is washed out in a couple of places. local equipment is working on it now. no idea on when it will be open. no gas here either.

Bob and Susan - 9-19-2014 at 05:45 PM

has anyone got past san Ignacio going south or north?

shari - 9-19-2014 at 06:11 PM

I finally arrived home and WOW...all of a sudden the phones and internet started working again!!! Gas wasnt a problem anywhere.

the devastation on the highways is amazing. The area between Guerrero Negro around the ejido has massive problems...the water washed away all the earth/sand below the edges of the highway so the pavement has just fallen down in big pieces and only a bit up the middle is passable in many places. Same with the highway out to Asuncion around the ranches and beyond. There was still water running in a couple places as well. I will add photos tomorrow. I can imagine the Abrojos road is the same or worse. An amazing amount of water came down from the Sierras....a veritable deluge.

A friend of mine made it to San Jose del Cabo this afternoon. Left San Diego two days ago. So, it can be done. He was driving a four runner. Quite the adventure I imagine.

CaboHenry - 9-19-2014 at 09:46 PM

Thank you Bajagringo, Shari, Bob & Susan for all this valuable road info. Road conditions reported by the Nomads are priceless.

For those that couldn't wait for better conditions and are currently heading down the peninsula or planning on it, Drive safe and be patient. Please continue to report back on fuel availability south of GN.

Is there fuel at Pemex in Mulege?

BajaNomad - 9-19-2014 at 10:21 PM

Roundabout answer to your question...If Kay and Larry Fitzwater are at La Fortuna, they can give you a road report..They left here last Sunday. If they are NOT there? There ya go...all I can suggest...

mtnpop - 9-20-2014 at 07:01 AM

Big mike 58 just arrived in the area seeing his posts this morning.. He has a home in the Orchard, I would expect he will be posting a road report as soon as he can... His will be current as of yesterday friday...
Kay and Larry actually headed down on Tues so should be there... no calls as I don't think cell service is working with US cell or anything in Mulege yet.
watch for his report.. he has a lot he is trying to accomplish...

Just heard from him second hand. Says he wishes he had waited. He had to beg for extra gas in Loreto by saying his family was stuck down in Cabo.

I talked to Saul Friday on land line. He said Larry and Kay are there in La Fortuna!

Saul said he had 1.23 meter of water in his store, city water is flowing, no power until later this week (best case) as most CFE lineman are down south dealing with issues on the cape and there are numerous power poles down outside town.

I leave southbound today.

BajaNomad - 9-20-2014 at 10:31 AM

This was posted to the BN Facebook page this morning:

Quote:

Drove yesterday from Mulege--which has gas at Pemex south of town but bank & ATM closed w/ power still out--to Guerrero Negro. Gas available all towns except San Ignacio, bank & ATM open Sta. Rosalia. The only treacherous water on road was vado at San Ignacio where stream ran over pickup's bumper on bed of rocks/boulders covering road; too deep for passenger cars. Major road repairs with wait times encountered only north of Vizcaino, where large chunks of NB lane broke away, one carrying Los Pinos semi now lodged drivers' side down in muck at the bottom. Huge soil-moving operation underway there, wait time an hour or so with muggy heat and abundant flies.
