New Baja Documentary

otwfront - 10-6-2014 at 03:57 PM

Hi, I wanted to let Baja fans know about "La Maestra (The Teacher)," a half hour documentary we -- surf photographer and teacher Paul Ferraris and Emmy Award winning public television filmmaker Elizabeth Pepin Silva -- are making, and our fundraising campaign to raise funds to finish the film. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/la-maestra

The film profiles a young Mexican teacher in a tiny rural fishing village in Baja, Mexico, who becomes the first Mexican woman surfer in her area. Told in Spanish (with English subtitles) using mainly Mayra's voice, the film shows how she has gone on to inspire both her students and other local women to take up the sport and follow their dreams. Through her deep connection to the ocean, Mayra has also become an environmentalist, teaching her students the importance of land and sea stewardship through hands on learning. And surfers - don't worry, we never reveal where Mayra lives, but those in the know will instantly recognize Mayra's home town. Please consider supporting our film, which will be released in late spring, 2015.

MMc - 10-6-2014 at 05:04 PM

I am in. This short should get our support it is a labor of love to make a documentary.
My first trip to that little town was in 78, 2 weeks and never got above waist high. I learner how important your travel companion is, I still tell stories about him.
I did meet Sean Collins on the road out.
When they poured the concrete for the bar my wife said she would never go back she did not want to the see the place it would become, she hasn't returned. I how ever........

MMc - 10-6-2014 at 05:16 PM

Copy the link and post to your other social network sites even if you don't contribute. By doing so, the word out will get out about this.

David K - 10-6-2014 at 07:34 PM

Good luck...!!!

BajaBlanca - 10-7-2014 at 06:24 AM

This is a wonderful project! I want all the kids I teach here in La Bocana to see it when it is done. Some pesos headed your way and please keep us in mind for a showing when it is finally finished!

otwfront - 10-7-2014 at 08:22 AM

Thanks so much everyone for your support of our film. We're having a hard time raising money and worry that we won't be able to finish it. It has been an unpaid labor of love up until this point, but we now face some tasks to finish the film that we have to pay someone to do, such as a sound mix so we can pass tech eval for broadcast. Bianca one of our "perks" if you donate is a dvd so you will be able to show the film to your kids. I think they will like it!

I hope this movie gets done.

Ateo - 10-7-2014 at 06:39 PM

Saw her surfing there in 2013. This seems like a great documentary.

I'm gonna show this trailer to my daughter.

I'll see if I can kick in some pesos, but in the meantime I will share on Facebook and Twitter.

Good luck.

MMc - 10-8-2014 at 02:17 PM

They got 1/3 of the budget. This realty should be supported.

shari - 10-8-2014 at 02:39 PM

I really liked the way the project is written up...a few more pesos headed your way for a most worthwhile project...cant wait to see it and show it to the surfer kids here.

Ateo - 10-9-2014 at 02:43 PM

Bump.

MMc - 10-10-2014 at 07:00 PM

Bump.

Ateo - 10-10-2014 at 07:30 PM

and this seems to be all over my Facebook feed. Talked about in the O'side parking lot this morning with my friend Chris before a great surf session. Hope this gets released. So yes, I'm bumpin'.

shari - 10-10-2014 at 07:45 PM

I also really liked that after making a donation, they emailed me personally and we have begun dialogue about organizing showings throughout baja. I invited them to come and participate in our annual surf tournament here in Asuncion and show the film in hopes of inspiring other young women to try surfing as well as hooked them up with the Ensenada surf club too who has a growing number of young ladies joining the team...Cmon Nomads...throw a few pesos their way...every little bit helps...even $10, the price of a six pack dudes!!!

I think many people hesitate to donate as they dont want to seem cheap or dont have money...but I've said it before and I'll say it again. If a small percentage of us Nomads gave even $10, it would help out alot in the end

Help,,

otwfront - 10-17-2014 at 08:36 AM

Baja Nomads we can't thank you enough for your support! We're so stoked you are into our film and are helping us out.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/la-maestra'

We have 12 days left and $6200 left to raise. An $18 donation gets you the film delivered into your inbox. $48 and you'll get a DVD and the digital download. If we are able to raise the money we need to finish the film, the film will be released in late spring. As Shari said, we are already talking to folks around Baja about doing screenings, so contact us if you'd like your community to have a screening. But first we need to finish the film!

Almost 10K of the 15K this looks like a good cause!

MMc - 10-22-2014 at 04:34 PM

They are only 2500 away from their goal with 6 day left!

Ateo - 10-23-2014 at 08:29 PM

Bump

otwfront - 10-26-2014 at 08:58 AM

Hi, we're in the last 48 hours of our fundraiser and still have $2000 left to raise which is a bit scary, because if we don't meet our goal, we can't finish the film. If you could share our link with your friends and family, we'd really appreciate it!
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/la-maestra/x/3098739

Because of Mayra's inspirational story, we're especially encouraging teachers in US to show the film in their classroom, which they can do for a $18 donation that gets them a digital download of the film. Our link is: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/la-maestra/x/3098739

If we reach our goal then we can give out free DVDs to teachers in Baja, which is important because as you know, internet service can be spotty in the more rural areas, making the download of the film difficult. Thank you everyone for your help thus far. Baja Nomads members have given us quite a few donations already, which we really appreciate! -Elizabeth & Paul

luv2fish - 10-26-2014 at 10:43 AM
