I've never heard of that happening.

woody with a view - 10-16-2014 at 10:32 AM

isn't that what a truck is for?

Bring the registration in your name. There are periodic inspections of vehicles for stolen goods after odile.

Nationals are more worried about police than we are. I guess they know them better.

It is no problem, you may very well be checked for registration ( I was).

:)) Indeed.

Locals surely know their police. But they don't always know regulations. ATV needs to be registered.

Neighbors had to turn around because they didn't have the right papers for their quads two days ago.

I have seen a horse in back of a pickup... on a curvy road (scary sight)! This was south of El Rosario, about 25 miles.

Pescador - 10-16-2014 at 04:41 PM

I carry mine that way all the time, even the Rzr

By local police, or federal check-point, or at the border? Police don't usually turn you around - they impound and/or give a fine.

the feds

trip is from La Paz to Mulege on hwy 1( not the border)
the term used was los federales

Just came back from down south and had my registrations checked very closely at two different checkpoints. For my truck, boat and trailer. Never had that before. Not going south, just north. No problem, just wanted to see them. I only had copies, not originals, and that was no problem.

They always were more thorough when going North. But not that thorough. Possibly trying to control looting in La Paz and Cabo, i.e. stolen boats and vehicles?

I believe it's illegal for a gringo to sell an ATV to a gringo in Mexico. That's what you are implying. Maybe the "free zone" is different than where I live, on the mainland, though.

So, having proof that a gringo sold a gringo ATV to another gringo in Mexico might be an opening for some form of Mexican authority to hassle you.

It's so difficult to answer questions about how Mexican authorities will act in ANY situation. If you had more than 14 posts, I think you would have learned this by now. Not trying to bust your chops for being a newbie, but there is very little that is cut and dried in Mexico, except machaca. Especially when it comes to the "authorities".

Why not ask David K to post some maps and waypoints that take you some backway from La Paz to Mulege, via some barely visible mission ruins. Nobody will be looking for you there, trust me.

Yes, please, route from La Paz to Mulege to BOLA that bypasses federal checkpoints :)...

It's a shame that mission ruins are barely visible - and some are not visible anymore, zero, nada. There isn't much ancient history NOB. Soon there will be the same in Baja. Kinda appendix to the living-dead NOB body.

Most of those 14+ posts are in consensus on the subject though. ATV needs registration, this is the law. Enforcement is another thing.

Is a registration needed for transporting a horse in the back of a pickup?

David K - 10-21-2014 at 07:20 AM

It wasn't my truck with a horse in it so you need to ask the rancher.

La Paz to Mulege via San Luis Gonzaga, San Javier, Comondu, La Purisima and over the mountain from Paso Hondo would be close or on El Camino Real and miss highway checkpoints. Watch for Baja 1000 prerunners.

The only checkpoint between Mulege and La Paz is the military reten north of Loreto and from my experience, they don't check vehicle registrations.

I found the photos...

I had forgotten I took any!
