Anyone been to the beaches of El Salvador?

I am traveling using frequent flyer miles and on the way to my destination, the plane routes through El Salvador. I am allowed a stopover and thinking about laying over for 4-7 days and heading to the beaches. My board surfing days are long behind me but still can lounge, relax and drink better than ever. (Well at least lounge and relax) :biggrin:

Anyone with experience down there?

Visited Acajutla on the coast in Jan. in a ship and drove up into a town in the foothills called Ataco. Beautiful small town with views of the mountains. The people were very friendly and the towns were clean. Very hospitable.

I spent the night in San Salvador back in '07. Beautiful beaches from the air. It looked like a quaint city. I'm going to Colombia in a few more months. Can't wait! :bounce:

Playa El Tunco near Sunzal is nice but very touristy, surf centric spot and a mere 30 minutes from the airport. Head north (west) for more seclusion.

I have never been, but my buddy's dad runs this place at La Libertad.

Always get El Salvador and San Salvador confused. Got a friend building a home on San Salvador.:)

San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador the country. There is also an island in the Bahamas called San Salvador. None of the beaches on the Pacific from Southern Mexico all the way to Peru are what you would consider pristine in a Caribbean sense. The best beaches are on offshore islands. There are any number of very interesting bergs and surf spots. The whole enchilada is buggy, carry deet! Violent crime is very rare but don't leave anything laying around. Golfito in Costa Rica is one of the longer surf breaks and pretty well visited but certainly not crowded.
