Fishing ban in northern sea of cortez

Tioloco - 10-27-2014 at 10:20 PM

Was in el golfo de Santa Clara (sonora) over the weekend. Word in town is that the federal government is shutting down ALL fishing in upper sea of cortez starting 12/1/2014.
Anybody able to confirm this? is this the Mexican rumor mill?

redhilltown - 10-28-2014 at 12:18 AM

Shutting down gill netting would be a great start...but I just can't see it happening. Shrimping after all is fishing and I can't imagine they are going to shut down the fleet.

dzrtracer - 10-29-2014 at 03:28 PM

Was down San Felipe south campos last week and our friends were telling us the Feds are buying out the shrimp permits and banning more areas of gillnetting. Near shore has already been banned for "commercial" but personal catch is allowed. We fished and first time didn't see any net floats within couple miles of the beach and 20lb+ Orangemouth Corvina were abundant.

treuboff - 10-29-2014 at 06:16 PM

About 6 years ago my friends were bought out of their netting rights and they took the money bought lots and refurbished the casas and rented out their old casas. Started up small businesses, took on part time jobs, and started tourist sport fishing. They also marked off areas where the shrimpers could not go and it was amazing how fast the population of Corvina grew in those areas.

Tioloco - 10-29-2014 at 06:22 PM

Guess we will have to wait and see how this shakes out. Boat owners will be compensated, crew will have to find alternative ways to survive. Wait and see!

redhilltown - 10-30-2014 at 12:16 AM

Fingers crossed!!!! Not an expert but I think Corvina go up and down the coast so a ban in one area may not help them as much as the resident fish but anything anything anything is++hopefully++a step in the right direction.

Government knows nets are being used from Todos South guess nobody cares. Mexico doesn't care, I stopped caring.

Bargins no mas

durrelllrobert - 10-30-2014 at 08:50 AM

The price of shrimp at Puerto Penasco was always a lot less than in San Felipe but I guess that will no longer be true.

That sounds good. A corvina looks like a small white seabass right?

BooJumMan - 10-30-2014 at 09:33 AM

Corvina do look a lot like a WSB! But they got two big teeth, which WSB dont have.

fishbuck - 10-30-2014 at 09:57 AM

Ok. I think I have caught a few smaller ones from the beach. Do they have a downward facing or "sucker" mouth and two big "wiskers".
The fish I am thinking of patrols the beach at the surf break for sand crabs.
Or is that a corbina?

Ok. I think I caught a few corVina in the estuary at Mag Bay. Funny I dont remember teeth. Maybe a different type of CorVina.
I love fish, fishing, and talking about fish. :)

fishbuck - 10-30-2014 at 10:49 AM

Ah, shortfin corVina in mag bay.
See how much I love fish? Now I talking to myself about them!

Von - 10-30-2014 at 12:33 PM

From what I understand, they plan on a 90% reduction 700 KM of surface area that can be fished ?? They need to go further, give the ocean a couple years to recover.

It sounds good. But, as usual, who will enforce it that cant be bought off?

Remember, it's illegal to commercially fish for dorado and billfish. Yet, its available everywhere in commercial establishments; restaurants, fish markets, etc.

treuboff - 10-30-2014 at 11:12 PM

Plenty of bill fish for sale Ensenada. Bought smoked Marlin for $10 per kilo

Good for you, using the capital V to be clear on what type of fish, as a corBina is totally different but also great eating surf fish!

fishbuck - 10-31-2014 at 07:05 AM

Thanks DK.
I hope this news is true. I would love to fish that area if it makes a comeback.I have seen areas that have been closed and it is truely amazing how well they can recover.

I certainly hope so. If the government subsidies were eliminated, as they should be, the price of shrimp would be forced to find a realistic level. It may even have a detrimental effect on demand. That would also be a good thing. Shrimping, wild or farmed, are an ecological and "marine life in general" disaster.

Von - 10-31-2014 at 10:41 AM

I think the humans can live with out shrimp for a few yrs. Live on some brown and black beans. mmmm~ Get me some Black beans!

Hook - 10-31-2014 at 11:28 AM

Grande shrimp, w/o heads, are running around 175-200 pesos/kilo this year.

What are you guys paying over there?

I'm also wondering what the definition of "northern sea of cortez" is? If it was closed from Kino, north, that would be the end of a huge percentage of the shrimping grounds.

Pescador - 10-31-2014 at 11:46 AM

Medios are running 220-240 a kilo. Send me 20 kilos on the ferry. :)

basautter - 11-2-2014 at 11:15 AM

Commercial or private fishing?

Old thread

durrelllrobert - 2-12-2015 at 10:28 AM

What's the latest news? Is the price of shrimp going up to 300p/ kilo?

bajabuddha - 2-12-2015 at 04:24 PM

It absolutely amazes me how so many people can pound the sand and cry about the loss of life and fish (and their personal fishing) in the SOC, yet still imbibe in the costliest method of harvesting there is, shrimping.

Save the whales, just as long as it doesn't interfere in my comfort zone.

bajaric - 2-14-2015 at 12:08 AM

I was at Cinco Islas November 2014 and a local guy mentioned that there was a plan to ban net boats and allow only rod / reel fishing. That area just gets pounded with gill nets and shrimp boats, there were half a dozen dragging the same spot every night.

I will say, though, if the water is clean you can pound the heck out of the fish and they will bounce back pretty fast if they get a breather, particularly the faster growing species. If the water is unfit to support life no amount of fishing restrictions will help. Witness the Southern California bight, turned into a massive toilet starting in the 1950's with the installation of the Hyperion sewage outfall; The tuna (then abalone, etc.) disappeared and never came back. South of the border there are no deep water outfalls. The "primitive" infrastructure in Baja results in clean water offshore. Capturing the entire flow of rivers (Colorado, San Joaquin) behind dams and using the water once and then dumping it in the sea -- bad for fishing.

Can anyone tell me where the bas starts? Does it go as far south as Gonzaga Bay?

Did anyone see this sign at the East Cape?
