David K - 10-28-2014 at 04:49 PM

The food products allowed into the USA list, dated 2009 and being used in 2014...

David K - 10-29-2014 at 08:28 AM

Anyone notice any difference in the items allowed north than on the much easier to read list from 2001?

woody with a view - 10-29-2014 at 08:46 AM

why do they say no fruits or vegetables every time I go to secondary? I just give away all of our extras so I don't have to deal with those brain-dead f*cktards.

Tioloco - 10-29-2014 at 06:50 PM

Well put, woody! Hahaha

David K - 10-29-2014 at 07:05 PM

It was rich when I declared I had limes (from America, no less) at Tecate, and the officer sent me to secondary only because of them (he said "well, limes are like oranges"!) LOL

In secondary, after waiting 15 minutes, the ag officer looked at my tag and said "LIMES? Get out of here!" and send me on my way without even looking at them... as they knew the first officer was an idiot!

Now, we don't bother with bringing any permissible food back home... kind of sad.

Tioloco - 10-29-2014 at 07:15 PM

It is a brain trust.

tjsue - 10-29-2014 at 08:27 PM

Forget the list, it all depends on the officer.

redhilltown - 10-30-2014 at 12:06 AM

It is a total and complete joke and we all know it. When David K or I or any of us get pulled into secondary they know exactly who we are and how many times we have been to Baja and how many times we have been cleared and are not a "danger". But it makes you wonder if they are so incompetent as to limes and such, how are they for terrorists etc??????

cj5orion - 10-30-2014 at 06:52 AM

so...maybe your bringin a couple extra steaks back
a half used block of cheese...etc,etc

all in "american" packages,vons,ralphs,whatever

you DONT "declare" them,to avoid a unneeded "secondary" DELAY

BUT...lucky you...ya get sent to secondary anyhow

IF ! they find this stuff...is it "undeclared and now you have a BIG problem or is it OK ?
cause its "american"

I get secondary ALL the time, like 8 outa 10,,hardly ever get searched. They jus take my license and readypass...45 mins go by....cya

bajaguy - 10-30-2014 at 07:56 AM

The only ones who know what type of problem you may have are wearing blue uniforms

It's bad enough when the blue suites don't know that difference but when they don't know the difference between dollars and pesos it really gets hairy. One time that did a thorough search of my car in secondary and found 2 deposits slips fro my Mx. bank account and both were well over 10,00 pesos and they accused me of money laundering. I explained that those were pesos and they wouldn't believe me because the amounts had a $ sign in front of them. Took almost an hour before someone else told them to let me go and that they had no right to detain me.

Bugman - 10-30-2014 at 12:04 PM

My belief is that stuff like this is a political exercise designed to make the public think they are doing their jobs. I say this because when individuals bring back a few fruits or veggies they are most likely to consume those so it is highly unlikely they would result in any kind of new pests coming into the country. However, this is visible to the public unlike the commercial side of things. Think how many truckloads of fruits and veggies come into the country uninspected every day as part of commerce. Yes, they check some of it but the amount that goes through untouched makes the stuff average folks bring in look like a drop in the bucket. Perception is everything I guess..........arghhhhhhh

Thank you...

I had seen that and it is very complex and not as user friendly as a simple list of what is OK to bring across the border.

I do appreciate your input, thank you!

cj5orion - 10-31-2014 at 07:44 PM

so....
does anybody have a REAL answer,to share...or should I jus find out for myself next time I go ? and then share it with all

A definitive answer would be great, but really is not possible. We live in California and shop a lot in Nevada. Recently we stopped at the border and talked with the ag inspector and she told us that the list changes all the time --- monthly or even weekly. It all depends on bugs and diseases that are current.

So since you are most likely crossing from Baja into California, the list changes all the time. So to be safe, coming from Baja, we just don't have any fresh food of any kind.

Especially since so much Mexican produce is already being sold in US markets.

AGAIN: This links you to a list of "Commodities" (fruits and vegetables) updated daily because the list it DOES change continuously, you can rely on it to buy in Mexico and bring back to the US; we use it every time we shop for groceries in TJ:

https://epermits.aphis.usda.gov/manual/index.cfm?action=coun...

For general information regarding other food products this other site may be helpful as well:

apple - 11-4-2014 at 07:11 PM

I got sent to secondary for bringing in a pomegranate two weeks ago. Is it just me or is that not on the list?

It's not just you...I shared the same info with David and he was not impressed. I guess he prefers posting dated info instead:O

David K - 11-4-2014 at 09:23 PM

User friendly is what works for most. A one page list in a glove box works better than searching the Internet when you probably can't view it driving in Mexico.

Outdated? I asked if anyone found changes between the 2001 and this list.

I am on vacation on my phone now, thank you.

User friendly is worthless if it is not totally up to date. Check out the websites and see how often things change!

As the ag inspector for California told us, one day things like red peppers are allowed, and then suddenly, they are not allowed. It all depends.

Did I miss something? Did not see frozen fish listed? Never in the past have had problem listing it on customs declare list, always just passed on in with it.
