Saturday we took in one of many Dia de los Muertos celebrations around town. This one was unique with the addition of a low rider car show.
Robin Williams made it into this huge altar
This dance troop came in from the mainland of Mexico.

Altars are made as a celebration of relatives and friends who have passed on. Items are placed to welcome the deceased back to this world, food and
drink, portraits, toiletries, sugar skulls, and mirrors are very common. The items have meaning to celebrated departed ones, like a favorite Tequila
or a pastry. Marigolds are common, as they are very fragrant and believed to help guide the departed back.
Anyone remember this fellow, (painted on the fender skirt of a early 50's Chevy)?

I sure do Ken his artistic name was "Cantinflas" his real name was Mario Moreno, he was the Jonathan Winters of Latin America in the late 50's, 60's

Very popular in Mexico but until "Around the World in 80 Days", not so much in the US. He certainly was important to the guy who painted his likeness
on his car!
The event was in San Diego.

Great post and pics, thanks. Day of the Dead is 3 days, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2nd.. I understand that Nov. 1st is for the children and babies, and Nov.
2nd is for adults.
We had an alter this year consisting of the cremated remains of my uncle, 3 dogs, and a cat. Also was a picture of my mother, a friendship circle
candle, some Halloween trinkets and a few bottles of booze!!
