Bringing Motor Oil & Auto Parts Into Mexico

I'm flat towing an old VW with an oldish truck down this season so am planning on taking a few spare parts and maybe some extra oil to do oil changes while down there. I seem to recall in the past that there are restrictions on bringing oil (like tires). I usually take 5 quarts w/o problems but may take twice that - 2 of the 5 gallon plastic jugs . Any thoughts ?

I've brought 4-6 of the gallon jugs down, before. They see them and say nothing.

More and more, over here, it seems like all they are looking for is big ticket items like flat panel TVs, appliances and tires at the Nogales Aduana checkpoints.

Of course, nothing can be concluded for anywhere else in Mexco, from that.

not any more Hook, This time at tecate had to pay tax for extra oils and other misc stuff plus pour all my race gas into my truck. everything checked thoroughly including my son driving an extra car...under the hood, on the trunk, under the seats.

never had an experience like that before...and because we cross often the ladies know us. When I asked her what was going on she just smiled ad shrugged

No, that couldnt be it, 'cause I am in a "free zone", too.

I see synthetics almost everywhere. They are from the US.

I also see many conventional US branded oils like Quaker State, Castrol and Pennzoil over here. But look closely at them. Many of them say Hecho en Mexico. I dont know if that means they are simply using Mexican crude for their US process or whether it is some other refining process.

Costcos in Mexico has had Delo 400, occasionally.

I bring down Shell Rotella because my diesel engines like it better than the other conventional diesel oils.

Ys I used Rotella as well. The clutch in our Ktm really likes the Motorex oil from Europa

I use Motul/Motorex in the 690 when I can....Motorex in 450 for years but am now trying Rotella. (Euro clutches are grabbier than Japanese it seems).

Does Lucas Oil actually make an OIL? All I see down here are fuel and crankcase additives. They are common.

I also occasionally see Kendall Racing oil down here. Haven't seen much about that since my days at OCIR.

There are many brands down here in the Autozones that I havent seen in years. Things like Bars Leak, Alumaseal and Rislone. All the products for persons who own cars that were never maintained correctly. :lol:

Are they still sold in the US?

I do like Lucas fuel additives, especially their fuel system cleaners. Whenever the Jeep starts to get balky from using Mex gas, a bottle seems to do the trick.

It's OK to hijack an automotive thread, right?

I run Castol GTX 20w50 in the old (new to me) '74 VW. I used to run straight 30 weight non detergent in my 1st VW back in the early 70's . Oil was still sold in the cylindrical 1 qt. cans and you'd poke the metal spout the top. can't remember when they went to the plastic bottles - mid 70's ?
