wine and the border

Can one declare wine (like cases of 2-buck chuck) at the San Ysidro crossing? I'm hearing horror stories of people getting hassled big time - fines - taking automobiles etc - any suggestions

southbound something like 3 bottles per person, but not for sure.

I got asked specifically how much wine and beer I had last trip at Tecate. The guy said the limit was 6 bottles of wine and a case of beer. Not sure if you can declare and pay duty on excess - probably wouldn't be worth it for 2 Buck Chuck. Some decent wines can be had in the Baja stores in the 5-10 dollar range .

I told them it was grape (uva) juice, no problema.

They will take excess wine from you at Tecate, not sure about San Ysidro. I thought it was 2 bottles per person, but not 100% sure.

6 bottles per person...........

I don't mind paying, I just want to know it wine is considered contraband and cannot pay a duty on it - Sorry about my cheap tastes, but $10 a bottle is a lot more than $2.00, when you have 50 bottles.

Used to lay wine in a large ice chest, dump a couple bags of ice on top then put water bottles and soda on top... no problems...

But now.. Sam's club in LaPaz has several pretty good wines for $27-$45 pesos per bottle... one is "Don Simon" from Spain... usually pickup several cases ... no complaints from our so called wine experts...Several of our neighbors pickup many one gallon jugs at Costco in Ensenada on the way down so they maybe looking for price not taste....

Wine

As you are coming into Ensenada, stop at the L.A. Cetto Cava across from Sano's Steakhouse (about km 107). It will be on your left just south of the 10th street/Costero (New Soriana supermarket) split on Hwy 1 coming into town.

Pick up a few cases of L.A. Cetto "La Salina" a nice red table wine. It's about 47 pesos ($2.80US) a bottle. Our Trader Joe's wine shoppers here in Ensenada like it a whole lot better than 2 Buck Chuck which is now $2.49 a bottle. Give it a try and don't worry about the border.

They have other wine selections including Chambrulee, a nice sparkling white. Check out a few other white selections in the refer case.

Also have nice bathrooms if you are in need

Last time thru I was told two bottles of wine or 9 bottles of beer per person. That was at the declare line in Calexico?
Everyone is different. I have also come across with a case of wine in non declare and they looked at it and did not say a thing. That was about a year ago. It seams like the mexican border officials are getting harder to deal with. I go with the cover it up and act stupid. Not hard for me

Good tip - So this is at KM 107 on Hiway 1 after you've made the turn from Hiway 2 coming from Tecate? I like L.A. Cetto wines - they make a decent dryish white also (non sparking) I recall 80ish pesos in grocery stores.

L.A. Cetto

to switch gears just a bit...wouldn't you think you should be able to bring as much beer ,wine, or alcohol into mexico as long as it was produced IN mexico?
the duty free store at the border has the absolute lowest price on tecate beer, here or there. heck, mexico already made their money on it, yes?
