Flare guns in Mexico?

SDGUY - 11-21-2014 at 12:59 PM

How do you think border agents and Mexican military would react to a flare gun and flares in a vehicle with no boat?

I personally don't think its a good idea. I remember reading a while back that they are considered illegal, but I haven't actually read that on an official page.

Martyman - 11-21-2014 at 02:02 PM

Put it in a zipper bag with lines, life jackets, other boat stuff. Should be fine...your friend has a boat, remember?

Thanks. That's kind of what I figured. I know they are not illegal outright because boats carry them.

DENNIS - 11-21-2014 at 02:10 PM

If there's no obvious need for a flare gun in your possession, I think it would be fair reason for concern, so I'll do the same thing they would do...ask why you have it. If self protection is your reason, I'd say it went from a nautical safety device to a weapon.
Then again...they may never ask.

I carry ridiculous amounts of fishing gear, so selling it as boat gear should be easy enough. "Can't trust them pangas to have proper gear ya know."

Flare gun

bajaguy - 11-21-2014 at 02:51 PM

I keep mine with my first aid gear....a life jacket also helps

You might want to invest in a pen type launcher, easier to "stow away" that an actual flare pistol

BooJumMan - 11-21-2014 at 04:19 PM

So basically they are legal as long as you have it within a boat (from what I read). I guess if you got a nice bag of obvious boat and fishing stuff then you'll probably be OK. Interesting.

mtgoat666 - 11-21-2014 at 04:32 PM

why do you need a flare gun to go on non-boating vacation?
what on earth are you going to use it for?

DENNIS - 11-21-2014 at 04:53 PM

I guess the shoulder holster is a bad idea.

aguachico - 11-21-2014 at 07:28 PM

Flare gun and flares are in my boat. They have been inspected by the military, no problem. Putting on in your car or anywhere other then a boat is not a good idea IMO.

jimgrms - 11-22-2014 at 09:24 AM

You may get away with it ,but then again maybe you won't is it worth some jail time ?

I doubt jail time would happen, but confiscation certainly could.

In all probability, nothing would happen.

Are you a marine? If so, you can do whatever you want. JUST KIDDING!

They would probably react like this:

They would now have cause to tear apart your vehicle.
They would now have cause to look for other possible violations.
They would now have you in their hands...at your peril.
They would now be thinking of a good Christmas bonus.
They would now be wondering how much they'll get for your car.

They will thank you for giving them all these opportunities.

willardguy - 11-22-2014 at 10:46 AM

then again.....a flare gun is your best option if you need to protect a smokin hot Nicole Kidman from a deranged billy zane!

sancho - 11-22-2014 at 10:55 AM

A fishing radio show out of San Diego, has had that ?, their
belief is,that is strictly boat equip. Folks here carry many types
of deterrents, if that is what your reason is. Just because one has not been questioned on an item doesn't mean jack. I would
never give the Checkpoint guys any leverage

Ribbonslinger - 11-22-2014 at 10:55 AM

A little off topic....

I had a bull moose in the rut give me a hard time in the bush a few years back. Did not want to shoot him, so I shot a flare off his head and he trotted off. Not sure if the results would be the same with a bandito.

For sure. Open a can of worms, and what do you get? Worms.

This is an Email I wrote to Fred Hoctor (Western Outdoor News Baja Editor) in 2000.

In July 1999 while returning from San Lucas Cove we were stopped at the last federal inspection at one of the Ensenada toll booths, and they found some spare flair gun shells in my boat. We had removed the flair gun because the Vagabundos said it was illegal and you could go straight to jail.
We almost got an extended vacation in Mexico. After being released to go on twice, and their calling their supervisors, we finally got to go.
If you are correct, someone forgot to tell the federalles. I am not
going to risk it this year.

if you live in Baja and speak the local talk and not a "Gringo" with that kind of "rub"....... a knife or flare gun is not a issue...don't let it be a issue..very simple...

sancho - 12-4-2014 at 12:37 PM

Looks like the OP is asking from a casual Tourist perspective,
not the Old Hat Baja resident. Do you think the Checkpoint
guys will treat a Baja Resident Gringo totally different
than the average Gringo down for vacation?

checkpoints and cop stops

captkw - 12-4-2014 at 01:21 PM

I have found that in almost all cases..where ever,,that the way you respond and act to a cop/CHP/fed/marine is the trick/answer in any part of the world..act like a CLass and get delt with like a CLass..be firm, happy, responsible, easy going, respectful and you will get the same response...been thru 100's of checks and border crossings and the only problem was coming back thru nicky and got "niked" for dogs "sello's""

Thanks for pulling rank on me.

Our house in Los Barriles was just sold last December.

I did my time in Baja since 1972, actually my first trip was TJ in 1957. I also did the Newport to Ensenada in 1959.

Do you have a 50 year history in Baja?

It took you 3 years on here to learn NOT to post with all caps. I don't believe you know how to talk to people.
