Thanksgiving in Anza-Borrego Desert SP

tripledigitken - 12-1-2014 at 12:59 PM

We had a great 4 day camping trip at Bow Willow CG over TG.

Weather couldn't have been better, 80's daytime dipping down into the low 50's at night with no wind. Enjoyed the coyotes singing every night under the stars.

Got us primed for out next trip south to Baja.

(Hook, you should recognize the campsite)

Paula with her first cup o joe

I went on a day hike to Mountain Palm Springs, the location I posted a photo of recently.

the early morning sun cast lots of shadows, this was an Ocotillo

if you look hard at center and a little left the palm grove is visible

Yep, isn't that site 3? Sites 2 and 3 are quite close to one another, as I recall. I always liked three the best. Site 1 is rather close to the trailhead parking. But all three of those are preferable to the other section of sites, IMO.

We were in (1) and the motorhome was in (3), closest to the trailhead.

I love camping out there.

Nice, very nice. First one is my favorite. Which camera was with you?

Thanks Diane for the kind words, I'm partial to the last image. Again, I used the NEX-7.

Bow Willow is one of the few places I have never camped out in ABDSP------we will have to correct that soon----maybe this spring as it IS beautiful around there.

Beautiful pics, Ken-------makes me envious, for sure. In the last 14 years we have spent a total of 14 months exploring around Anza-Borrego----we never get enough!!!

You should check it out. We were in site #1, turn right as you approach the restrooms. We had morning sunrise exposure and shade by 3pm. Please file a trip report.

Loved your photos Ken. Did you make a reservation? Is there a web site for these camp sites? Looks like a great spot for Thanksgiving, or any time during the winter months.

Bob,

First come first served. We arrived weds and it was only half full. Just get there before a friday and you should have no worries. Take your own drinking water, they have only non potable water.

I used to camp there when I was a bit younger (50 years or so ago). In springtime, chasing reptiles especially Western Diamond-backs to milk venom. I'd trade it (the venom)to the local pet-shop for mice to feed the snakes I kept.
Thanks Ken

What did they do with the venom?

BigOly - 12-5-2014 at 01:20 PM

SJ...The guy at the store gave me containers with instructions. He said it was for research. Yes, gave a 12-13 year old instructions for milking rattle-snakes.
